Seems that you agree with me in the important points - that there is a reason to scare children with the bogey man and eternal burning in hell and it is effective lies to make children to obey the parents. And that it works on grown-ups too.
To get the desired result it is okay to lie.
No, I don't think so. It's much better to reason with people. But that's just my opinion.
your ability to carry a drivers license. Being forward of danger and consequences are just
a part of life.

...is a credible and well known, explicitly spelled out threat and therefore an effective deterrent.
What is the deterrent effect of the threat of some sort of grotesque and incomprehensible supernatural vengeance in the mind of someone who sincerely finds it far-fetched and incredible?
Do you ever pause to ponder how man made and poorly thought out your threats sound to non-believers?
If it is has no deterrent effect, then what is the point? And then, if it had no deterrent effect during a non-believer's lifetime, what would be the point of carrying out the threat?

Since you don't believe it's real and you don't believe it's a deterrent why do you feel the need to continue flogging the dead horse?
Originally posted by FMFYou seemingly don't believe it's real. Yet it bothers you to the extent that you always have to go back to discussing it. You just won't ever let it go. So maybe it's more of a deterrent than you are willing to admit.

Originally posted by dj2beckerOf course I don't believe it is real. The question keeps coming up - but it keeps getting dodged, like you are dodging it now - and there seems to be no answer. Perhaps the discussion of this fundamental point will end when the question is addressed by those who believe that the threat of torture is a deterrent to people who don't believe it's real or credible.

Originally posted by FMFWhat if it is a deterrent to those who do believe it's real, isn't that good enough for you?

sonship and KellyJay have declared themselves "saved" already because of what they believe, regardless of what happens or regardless of what they do ~ deterrent or no deterrent. Clearly they believe the deterrent is intended for people who do not believe in Christ. And it doesn't make sense.

The questions are for Christians - not ex-Christians - they are for those who claim the threat of torture is a deterrent - not for people, like me, who think it is far-fetched, morally incomprehensible nonsense.

is not good. The only ones that it will deter will be those with the fear of God in them, the
rest can mock God, there is no fear of God in them, their works will reveal what manner
of people they are, as their words will too.
