I got a question recently: ”FabianFnas, don't you want to live?” and the obvious answer would be ”Yes, of course, a while longer.” But it triggered me to think a bit.

In the christian belief system there is a soul in every body, at least noone can explain it to me so I can understand.

The soul is immortal, right? I am my body – my brain, my muscles ...[text shortened]... soul. Skip the biblical refs, they mean nothing if they don't make me understand.

Thank you!
I lose count of the number of times I have asked this very question in the past. The most detailed and useful response I have had thus far can be reduced to:

It's a logic defying magical thingy-majig that is an intrinsic part of you (even though I can't describe any practical need for it) - it's existence can be demonstrated by - and only by - wishing really really hard that you have one
i.e. faith
😞

I dont know how to explain this any clearer than i can, no one is in possession of a soul that is something that is distinct from the body, we are souls, its a reference to the entire person. When God breathed life into Adam the Bible states that Adam became 'a living soul'. He did not possess a soul, he became a soul, an animated, living breathing entity. You are a soul. I am soul, everything that breathes and is animated is a soul.

Lev. 24:17, 18: “In case a man strikes any soul [Hebrew, nephesh] of mankind fatally, he should be put to death without fail. And the fatal striker of the soul [Hebrew, nephesh] of a domestic animal should make compensation for it, soul for soul.” (Notice that the same Hebrew word for soul is applied to both mankind and animals and refers not to some immaterial entity but to the entire person.)

still not convinced?

“There is no dichotomy [division] of body and soul in the Old Testament. The Israelite saw things concretely, in their totality, and thus he considered men as persons and not as composites. The term [nephesh], though translated by our word soul, never means soul as distinct from the body or the individual person. . . . The term [psykhe] is the New Testament word corresponding with [nephesh]. It can mean the principle of life, life itself, or the living being.” New Catholic Encyclopedia (1967), Vol. XIII, pp. 449, 450.

“The Hebrew term for 'soul' (nefesh, that which breathes) was used by Moses. . . .signifying an ‘animated being’ and applicable equally to nonhuman beings. . . .New Testament usage of psyche (soul) was comparable to nefesh.”—The New Encyclopædia Britannica (1976), Macropaedia, Vol. 15, p. 152.

“The belief that the soul continues its existence after the dissolution of the body is a matter of philosophical or theological speculation rather than of simple faith, and is accordingly nowhere expressly taught in Holy Scripture.” - The Jewish Encyclopedia (1910), Vol. VI, p. 564.

Now Agers my son, there can be no misunderstanding surely?

Man can kill the body only.
God can kill both body and soul.
Matt 10:28
Sounds like separate entities.

How do you people know who is spiritually dead.
Only God knows that.

Playing God again?

Matt 10: 28 is a quote from Christ not me.
Interpret it how you like.

So then "soul" is merely a synonym for "thing that lives"? Fair enough...so when we cease to function as living entities so does the soul.

So much dicking about on this topic when people could just have come along and said we just wanted a new name for living things - and we invented "soul" - nothing supernatural about them, since being things like rats, tigers, humans, llamas etc... they're just as physical as apples!!

yes exactly! The idea that a soul transcends death is Greek (probably Chaldean originally), but not Biblical.

Since when spiritually dead = not alive in Christ.
To say that anyone is spiritually dead means you are playing God.

This is why I take you guys on all the time. Your arrogance and your boasting of your SAVED "superiority" stinks to high heaven. IM SAVED. I SIN 24 HRS A DAY BUT I'M SAVED. I DONT HAVE TO DO ANY GOOD WORKS.

Bunch of damn fools.
