Why is it not a religion? Or, if you are so inclined, at least a sect in Hinduism?

You are talking about the "Free yourself from desire to break the cycle of rebirth" form of Buddhism, right?

The one that claims the human ego is an illusion.
I dont see why its a religion because there's nothing spiritual about it.
It can all be explained as if it was science.

You state you WOULD pick it, then why don't you choose it and follow its teachings? What holds you back ?

i would like to hear a debate on which religion is the correct one to follow. i myself am non-denomination and i believe in God.
i like religions that have very charismatic, dogmatic, leaders who preach that they are the reincarnation of jesus and demand complete and unquestioning dedication from the congregation even to the point of brainwashing torture.

if they are not asking for 10% or more from your hard earned pay cheque, forget them.

if they don't insist that you go out into the street to find lonely and sad people to convert to disciples, forget them.

if they don't have at least one high ranking member in jail for attempted murder or drugs traffiking, forget them.

if they're not planning a mass suicide cause the government won't give them tax exempt status, forget them.

if they don't all live in one big house on an isolated ranch, forget them.

if all the women aren't married to the leader, forget them

if the women he's married to aren't under the age ofsixteen, forget them.

these are points i look for when i'm choosing a new sect or religion. i hope they help you too. god bless.

Not quite "original" Buddhism. Remember Buddha's original premise.

Er ... "rebirth", "karma" - not spiritual?

And how would you explain it all as if it were a science?

Alright, maybe its not original buddhism. But the kind of buddhism that I "believe" in contains nothing spiritual. Rebirth is explained like this: When you die the atoms of your body wil remain here and will eventualy become part of other life, this is simple science. It does not claim that your consciousness will remain after you die.

Its essentially a way of looking at yourself and the world.

Then why must one not be attached to this world? Why must one not do evil?

If you can say to yourself "I am that", you won't harm others unless you want to harm yourself. Your choice. If you have no compassion, it's a different story.

The problem with LOTC's view is that I am not that. Yes, my atoms will move on and become part of other living creatures but, at any given time, the atoms that constitute me are distinct from the atoms that constitute you.

Further, unless I choose to empathise with you, your pain is yours and not mine in any sense.

Your atoms, your energy field, are connected to everything else. You're not separate, unless you live in a hard vacuum. If "I am that" means nothing to you, who cares?

First, just to remind you that we are talking about LOTC's "Atomic Buddhism" here.

Second, so what if my atoms, energy field etc. are connected to everything else? My hair and fingernails are clearly connected to me - does anyone worry about cutting them off?

The question to LOTC still stands - how does his view lead to a moral imperative to do good and/or avoid evil?
