Yes, and I don't know what the answer is. They might still be as hateful, they might not. I doubt his church could attract so many followers without appealing to such a widely recognized and respected source of authority as the Bible. Similarly, I doubt the charities would attract so many donaters without the same appeal. I'll leave it to you to infer what these conclusions say about each organization's followers.

Nothing so alienates me from religion that witnessing adherents assert that some manifestly hideous action is wrong because it goes against God's commandments .
It makes you wonder whether they would continue to regard it as manifestly hideous if they were somehow to become convinced that it was in keeping with God's commandments.
It's like such people's inherent moral sense is crippled, and can only kept awkwardly mobile with the assistance of a crude prosthesis: God's "revealed" opinion on the topic.
