why does everyone make such a big deal about god? what has he done for anyone? He has done absolutely nothing for me and it will probably stay that way forever. so why even believe in him. what makes you think that people dont just tell you that there is a god just to get you to pray or act decent?
Have you ever read the Bible?...not the King James version, but the New Standardized Edition, which is easier reading? Try reading the Book of John first to see what God has done for you...you might be amazed.....😉

Don't worry! According to the Old Testament, if He hasn't done anything for you so far, after that little outburst, you can at the very least expect a thorough smiting is on its way for you in the not too distant future!

So take heart, my friend!

And before then, John Newton sure was lost.

A story of victory of the human spirit over the brutality that was the slave trade.

I wouldn't call her questioning an 'outburst'! I think God encourages sincere seeking, and even honors it. Psalm 91 is quoting God when it says "I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation."

Brings to mind another question: What in the world is God doing honoring me? I guess that's part of His nature of love!

Of course, even His love (in the sense of having a relationship) can't reach someone who doesn't turn his head far enough to acknowledge Him.

How good is good, that's the question. Part of what Christians believe, is that no-one lives a good enough life to get to heaven on their own merit.

Believing in God isn't really about leading a good life. It's much more about having a relationship with the one who created/designed you.

And that's your choice. But I thought the aim of this thread was to understand why some people DO believe in God.

I do think that asking "what has God done for me lately" is kind of missing the point. Assume for the moment that God does exist. Isn't it more likely that the creator should be asking YOU what you've done for HIM lately? After all, you were created for him, not the other way around. I don't believe in God just so he can 'do nice things' for me.
