Marks for conformity
(or lack thereof) as well as

Wouldn't there be a problem with voting? I looked at the links and the entries were anonymous in the past. Hmm, there were some great elements of fiction in my sermons, too. Nah, I'll try something original.

i might have a go, depending on topic and time available.

maybe we could leave the topic open, but stipulate that chess has to be somehow important to the plot?

Chess being important to the plot might be too restrictive.

Yes - the only chance for me to participate would be a clear deadline (without a clear deadline I'll never get started...) that is not too soon. There are several other things I really need to work on though, so I am not sure I can make it anyway.
