@vivify saidNot sure it’s a good idea to let an authoritarian state with a disgusting current human rights deficit tell tell two democracies that they cannot visit each other.

Do they think we are stupid enough to think they are going to start WWIII over a nothing burger diplomatic visit.
It’ll be interesting to see how the right wingers frame this defiance on the part of the dems given that Biden is in China’s pocket🤔
@kevcvs57 saidTaiwan leads the world in manufacturing of semiconductors, which are used in pretty much every electronic device like cell phones, cars, computers, etc. Taiwan is a powerful asset because of this.

Don't be fooled into thinking this is about standing up for the little guy. This is about power and money; China's control of Taiwan would increase their financial stranglehold on the world.
So this visit is not a "nothing burger" because the idea of Taiwanese independence means losing one of the biggest trump cards in the world. This is why China reacts how they do whenever people refer to Taiwan like it's an independent nation, like banning John Cena's movie from China because he called Taiwan a "country".

@vivify saidOh I don’t think there has ever been foreign policy that was actually about standing up for the little guy.

But given the importance of semi conductors to the global economy it’s all the more reason why Taiwan should be supported in their independence.
In the meantime we should be developing our own semi conductor capacity nearer to home to ensure we do not become as reliant on China for this staple as Europe has on Russia for oil and gas.
@kevcvs57 saidThat's where it gets sticky: do we ignore China's legal claim to Taiwan just because that government is an a-hole?

Regarding what you said about the U.S., Congress just approved funding for manufacturing of semiconductors in America just a few days ago. So Pelosi's visit to Taiwan is quite obvious.
@vivify saidYeah I think I saw a CEO talking on CNN ( might have been Intel ) about that and they are definitely planning an expansion based on the initiative.

No I think you can accept China’s legal claim to dominion over the Island whilst supporting the wishes of the people who have lived there and developed independently of the mainland for more than 70yrs. Maybe this time, given Taiwans stronger negotiating hand, China will respect something along the lines of one Country Two Systems that it cast aside in Hong Kong. But given the CCPs history of being too fragile to tolerate political or cultural diversity, maybe not.
I also think that Taiwans significance is based on the strategic importance of the Taiwan strait.
