@wajoma saidLevels of taxation in New Zealand are set by the freely elected representatives of the People.
Like I said it's only the level that's up for debate, in NZ it's about half your working life, that is to say, no longer 'modest levels of taxation'.
Also to maintain slaves at a level popularised on movies and tv costume dramas (No1's source of history) was in itself very labour intensive, constantly driving, driving, all that whipping, reluctant workers, careless worker ...[text shortened]... and housing. All that effort there's not much difference between that and simply doing it yourself.
Chattel slaves don't get to vote on whether they will be enslaved or not.
Obviously slave owners thought it was worth the cost of forcing other folks to work for their economic benefit rather than "doing it themselves" just like capitalists do. Of course, both relied on the State backing up that force.
@vivify saidFurther personal benefit: their damned heathen souls were saved by Christianity. Surely that was worth trading their bodies and their children’s bodies and their children’s children’s bodies for.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/floridas-new-education-standards-says-slavery-had-personal-benefits/Florida's new Black history curriculum says "slaves developed skills" that could be used for "personal benefit"
Florida's 2023 Social Studies curriculum will include lessons on how "slaves developed skills" that could be used ...[text shortened]... and painting.
The curriculum was approved by Florida's board of education on Wednesday.
KellyJay will be along in a moment to confirm that trading their bodies for their souls was actually a great deal for them.
Come to think of it, slavery has been a great boon to the American Black man evolutionarily, too. From the Island of Goree to the point of debarkation in the New World, slaves were not fed. It is estimated that a quarter did not survive the voyage. Those were the weaklings, of course, whose weakness dropped out of the gene pool. Those who survived were the hardiest and passed on their genes; a considerable improvement of the genetic base.
Moreover, slave girls got to become concubines of their plantation owners, thereby fulfilling OT prophecies.
So slavery was a total win-win for the American Black man and woman, genetically, spiritually, and, er, whatever.
At last, a jobs-training program the Radical Right can fully support. Let's bring it back, federally mandate it, no pussy-footing around with state's rights this time, eh?
@wajoma saidStop being a halfwit no government forces you to pay tax the way that slavers forced their slaves to work for nothing unless you know of a government that taxes people at 100% and flogs and rapes them got good measure.
This is no more exaggerated than the 'US was built on the backs of slaves' fairy tales.
Dealing with men by force and threats of force is not the most productive way. Also there were levels of slavery one might say their salary was garnished (whether they liked it or not) to be be provided with services (whether they liked them or not) not entirely unlike modern taxation. ...[text shortened]... , the terms are defined the only thing to debate is how much of a slave to goobermint are you today.
It’s like equating robbery with being kidnapped and forced to do hard labour π
@kevcvs57 saidSo if slaves were given a paltry allowance they'd no longer be slaves.

@wajoma saidYep they’d still be slaves unless they were able to leave the plantation and go and SELL their labour elsewhere and maybe do something completely different with their lives.

Their is no analogous relationship between the brutality of slavery and being asked to pay a society a reasonable fee for the infrastructure and services that it provides in order for you to live a life and earn a living. If you do not want to pay you are free to remove yourself from that infrastructure and those services as some already do.

Bit of a slip up there kev, we have to pay to earn a living? The key words are 'have to' the key issue is force, and threats of force. The IRD does not ask you for tax, it commands, how you like to twist language to downplay the force of the state. Not all slaves were brutalised and raped, you do see the amount of effort that, that requires is more effort than the return you get on a slave.
It did happen but it was nowhere near the scope portrayed on tv and films. If you want to group all the maltreatment of slaves, you're going to lose when we group all maltreatment by goobermint. Add up slavery, car accidents, tobacco and alcohol related deaths and nothing comes close to what goobermints have done to their own citizens as a group.

Nothing like extreme-right morality to make one double in laughter.
@shavixmir saidPlease post a reputable definition of 'extreme right wing' then quote something that I have posted that fits this definition.

Until you show me where slavery was a conservative endeavor I will laugh at your ploy.
All my research shows slavery is/was a product of liberalism, such as with open borders now.
@wajoma saidOh dear your ultra right wing scumbaggery will not even let you post in a rational manner. You can migrate to a lower tax environment, you can live out a subsistence life where you do not fall into the clutches of the evil tax gatherers.

You obviously feel that the other ‘little’ people should pay for the roads, water treatment infrastructure and waste disposal, the police, the courts etc etc whilst you stand above it all.
If we do not pay, who pays, if the corporations do not pay why should they have access to transport links, ports, power networks etc
You think and talk like an idiotic spoilt child.
No slip wajoma just obvious in your face common sense.

@mott-the-hoople saidHey stupid no one is claiming slavery was specific to conservatives but we are say as a matter of fact that it’s conservatives that are trying cover up its existence and / or grossly misrepresenting the inhumane brutality of it.

Unless of course DeSantis et al are not conservatives but radical right wing fascists, what say you π€
