"Ima slap you!"

I heard the police showed up at Rock's door and asked if he wanted to press charges and Rock declined. The assault is on film and evident.

Here is my question: If Smith had slapped his wife (obvious spousal abuse on film) and she declined to press charges would the police press charges anyway? I heard they would. Is that the case?

Are you saying Smith and Rock planned the whole thing in advance?

It was obvious to me, except I can't believe that Will's wife would be used for that. Anyway, these brothers took over and ruined this institution, with a touch of profanity F--- on national TV, no prob with these people, we really have a culture problem in this country.
My G-daughter was all excited staying up to see the Oscars. I am sorry what she saw, but to be honest, I have done a great job of acquainting her with the world around her so it was not much of a shock. Y'all would HATE what my tutelage has been!!!

Possible I guess.
I thought the same thing about Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake exposing her boob during a performance. It even looked like he did it on purpose. Remember that?

Too bad you didn't use the event as a lesson.

You know, "Real men defend their wives," something like that.

No, here you are, whining about "bad words".

It wasn’t staged.
Smith has now apologised to Rock (which he didn’t do during his acceptance speech).

You can’t behave like that towards comedians. What sort of example is that to set? If you don’t like how a comedian treats a heckler, just get up on stage and assault him? Complete madness.
You don’t like a joke? Don’t laugh.

Good on Rock for not pressing charges.
However, I can’t see why the police need Rock’s statement on this.
But what are they going to charge Smith with? Slapping someone?

That granddaughter of yours must be the most depressed, unluckiest and confused granddaughter on the freakin planet Joe. I think you should start a web page or something and get some support for this eternal 1st world victim.

"But what are they going to charge Smith with? Slapping someone?"

It is called assault. It is against the law in the USA. If you do that to your spouse you get charged with assault whether the spouse wants him charged or not. Same should apply here. Now kids watching think that is acceptable behavior.

As long as you are defending the honor of your wife assault is acceptable. Is that the message you want kids to get?

then educate your kids better.

The victim decided to be the bigger man and not to press charges. No other people were hurt. Case closed.

Justice shouldn't always be blunt and blind to the circumstances.

Oh, it’s called assault, is it… I did not know…

The police can’t get involved with every bloody punch up.
If they were there, they should have dragged him away immediately. Arrested him.
Then let him go after he’s cooled down and apologised. You can’t lock everyone up.

There’s no real physical harm. So, unless the victim wants to pursue it, then leave the police out of it.

And no, it’s not the example one wants to for the kids, but what happened afterwards is.

I don’t think he was defending his wife’s honour, he was taking it in his stride until he saw the crushed look on his wife’s face, I think he cracked a bit at that point and clearly regretted it in the aftermath.
It’s a shame it spoiled what should have been one of the biggest nights of his life.
As for the kids I would advise any parent or guardian to talk about these things when kids witness them and explain why Smiths reaction was inappropriate but also explain why he might have found Chris Rocks comments so hurtful given his spouses medical condition. Her condition is quite common amongst school age children and they may have witnessed the pain that bullying remarks can cause regarding the condition.
