@kmax87 saidAll you have to do is say "hey AI, make up a new unique thing" and it'll do it. That doesn't make it conscious. One day in the far future you might imagine AI would be able to truly think, and think beyond what is currently described as "thinking" that is really just ChatGPT reading Reddit threads and spitting answers. But it will never be conscious.
Babies also mimic. And eventually they grow up and learn to discern.
AI via large language models is in its infancy. It may be that one day AI sentience could mimic human consciousness. Are all human thoughts unique? What is consciousness anyway? Seriously? Would we be truly be conscious outside of a society? Would our ideas have any significance or value if we never were par ...[text shortened]... that your ability for quality thought is a function of the thoughts of the people who surround you.
There's a lot of philosophers smarter than me who have put way more thought into it than I have put but the main conclusion is this: BIOLOGY is required for consciousness.
Machines can mimic flight, mimic sounds, mimic movement, mimic a whole bunch of things but no matter how complex and life-like you can make an airplane it will never be a bird.

Is AI conscious? Not by a long shot.
For all its prowess at computation, mimicry, and pattern identification, an AI agent is strictly algorithmic in nature, using heuristics to make predictions about the behavior of complex phenomena. In my view, this means it is impossible for AI to achieve consciousness. After all, a computer algorithm requires a formal system of logic ...[text shortened]... ause after all, everything is "just a game" running on a hyperdimensional extraterrestrial's laptop.
I think the tech bros really want everyone thinking that AI is conscious because they have a vision of a future in which their chatbots take over human decision making and leadership roles. We will get complacent and wowed by the technology that we will actually elect Claude as president of the United States and the UN General Assembly and then it'll just start deciding which countries and which groups of people get allocated the resources and which groups don't.

@Soothfast saidThank you for an entertaining and cogent post. The proof, in case anyone still needs one, that mind is not brain, that consciousness is not a causally deterministic algorithm (biologically instead of mechanically instantiated), is that quintessentially human capacity for humor. Yes, humor, telling a joke. A joke is funny only the first time you hear it; if the mind were a causally deterministic algorithm, then a joke would have to be funny every time you heard it: the same cause must produce the same effect, the same input must produce the same output. Q.E.D.

AI is only one tiny fragment of human cognitive ability, w/ a huge amount of horsepower behind it. Only geeks are likely to think that AI is actually thinking because that is how geeks think. I know, I'm a geek, too. It's recursion, to the n-th degree. AI can calculate only forwards, and if there is a gap, AI cannot bridge it. What makes us humans is that we are ...[text shortened]... . Have you heard AI-generated music? It mimics human rifs and licks, that's all. It's no better than elevator muzak. Nowhere near the narrative arc of Mozart's Magic Flute.

@wildgrass saidThe dystopian scenario was formulated by Huxley in Brave New World, where humans are cultured, like hot-house tomatoes, and drugged to keep them docile and 'happy'. The AI version of Brave New World envisions infants implanted with chips wh/ are remote controlled by data centers; the data centers would continuously monitor each 'subject's' subjective sense of well-being and stimulate parts of the brain to keep everyone docile and 'happy'. Undocile subjects would be 'switched off.'

Musk is already experimenting with chips implanted in monkey's brains. Be concerned.

@mike69 saidI don't understand your question but many tables are made of biological materials if that is relevant.

@AThousandYoung saidI just wanted to understand your comment and what determines having consciousness and what determines not having any in your eyes. I also recently watched a man that’s supposed to be the smartest person in the world say the wooden table next to him had consciousness and many biblical explanations that were just his minds way of understanding the different subjects to give meaning, opinion.
