@shavixmir saidThat's the protection. Brains have to think not only of themselves but as a part of a larger system. AI, like the politicians that love it, only thinks of itself.
Not necessairly, but when thinking of the brainnas an emerging system, isn’t it that part of that argument is that each brain is partnof a larger system?
@wildgrass saidBut at least animals observe Natural law. Naturally.
If animals don't deserve rights then these things certainly don't either.
@Martin saidBut it IS political.
What the hell has politics got to do with it; this is nothing to do with democrats nor Republicans.
Just for once don't screw up a sensible forum that is being intelligently debated.
It is the same stupid right-wing fanatics that idolize Trump that has become "all-in" on AI.

@shavixmir saidkmax nailed it: humans did not evolve as individuals. We evolved in groups. But just putting a group of computers together in a room doesn't lead to consciousness, because there is no evolutionary pressure for computers to cooperate. There was, for humans: that's how we prevailed over large-toothed predators and other hominids. Language is the key to cooperation; without language, we are but apes with fire. Language is the medium whereby knowledge transcends time and place. If every generation had to learn from scratch what snakes and plants are poisonous, we wouldn't be here.

@Martin saidComputers passed Turing's test ages ago.
I agree; however, one comment stands out:
"They're ventriloquist's dummies"
That may be true today but what about in 1, 2, 5, 10, years from now as the science progresses?
Personally I don't think AI can ever develop a 'conciousness' but by having the ability to process billions of options and combinations of actions it may well appear so.
@J-D saidWhen Musk first debuted Grok, he claimed it was "too woke", but when he reprogrammed it to spew more conservative ideas, it started sounding like a member of the Third Reich.
Ai will always say what it is programmed to say.
Ai companies right now have to reprogram Ai to be more woke because of Ai actually telling the truth which is "offensive"
Multiple examples are available, just research it.
.
Thus, No Ai program will ever be free to tell the truth.
Even a conscious Ai will be told what to say because Ai will be owned by a company and the highest bidder says what's what. π

Confess now, you'll feel better.
@shavixmir saidWe have the ability to modify our ideas of good and bad based on higher truths like "the common good".
What is human consciousness?
Generally accepted, it’s a whole load of electric pulses being fired and received in the brain. Chemical reactions, say.
How different is that really?
@kmax87 saidThis is it. AI has no discernment. Although early on, most AI, due to its ability to scan the internet, developed ideas the far-right would call "woke". What terrifies me is the insane ideas now being fed to it to counter this "wokeness". That is what will ruin this scheme. Imagine a far-right AI. Now imagine a racist AI. Musk is currently trying to fine-tune his to BE far-right, but to hide it so it is not-so-obviously far-right. Absolutely no concept of a "greater good".
Babies also mimic. And eventually they grow up and learn to discern.
AI via large language models is in its infancy. It may be that one day AI sentience could mimic human consciousness. Are all human thoughts unique? What is consciousness anyway? Seriously? Would we be truly be conscious outside of a society? Would our ideas have any significance or value if we never were par ...[text shortened]... that your ability for quality thought is a function of the thoughts of the people who surround you.
