The U.S. government can't force anyone to get vaccinated, that's just fear mongering.

All the government can do is place rules on government employees who want to continue working in their positions.

Are we pretending that vaccinations weren't already required for participation in various things in our society? e.g. school, athletics, international travel.

Yes, there is and was always the option to stay home and not participate in society.

Airlines, schools, concerts, etc. are places where you are not allowed to bring things that are dangerous to other people (like bears or viruses).

No it's not new. The rule of law is a social contract. It's thousands of years old, and forms the framework for our constitution.

You have a right to participate in society if you are following the rules of that society. Like, you have to wear pants at work.
