My understanding is that he had competent legal representation, and he plead guilty to disrupting official proceedings, which is a felony. Probably the police were doing what they thought was appropriate at the time for someone who was not acting violently.

Kevin McCarthy , leader of House of Representatives (who would hardly soil his reputation in today’s world) gave the video to Tucker’s show, to get it out to a lot of people. In all of that melee, one guy, wearing viking helmet, wandered and was escorted politely by police throughout the capitol. We don't know what that was about, but I could not see where he did anything to draw a 4-yr sentence. I think he put a foot on a desk, and a few more indiscretions. So, I am questioning what he did really wrong.
Further, I am drawing attention to the media's rendering of Josh Hawley 'fleeing like a coward',, when in fact he was with about 40 congressmen being escorted by police.

Murdaugh had said under oath that he was not at the kennel. He stayed with that line until he took the stand, and said, "Well, (to the jurors) I lied, I was there". I am sure his lawyer sank in his seat,,,,thinking, man, I just screwed up.
