There's a girl from Uganda like that in one of my classes. She caught a cold the other day and was bewildered because they don't have colds or flu in her country because it never gets cold. Their diseases happen in localized epidemics, not just casually spread at school.

First sentence points out for your readers that you interject the country of Spain into this domestic (USA) issue. Americans among your readers might not be up on Spain, like me.
My 2nd paragraph is quite clear, no need to be obtuse. But really, does not being a dependent upon the protection of ‘Big Brother’ give you a queasy feeling of not being able to take care of ...[text shortened]... ng.?
Answers on this would be nice, but I understand that being obtuse may be an escape device.
