Perhaps the school board should be castigated for making a mountain out of a molehill.
I haven't read through the entire thread but with free speech comes some responsibility. It isn't totally free and without it's consequences. Just try popping off a bomb joke in an airport security line.
The school has to have the ability to regulate what can and can not be written, said, displayed, or any other actions the students may engage in (fighting?) (Sexual harassment?). They need the power to keep disruptive individuals in check to maintain order. This is a requirement at all levels of society. Even though this guy was not on the school grounds when the display was made, his actions were obviously disruptive. That can be seen by the number of other kids helping hold the sign up.
I think he will not find the courts ruling in his favor.
