@moonbus saidMost of Europe is, it's just the UK and Ireland who are prudes. Nudest parks in Germany, don't judge a country by one stupid 'news' article as well, plenty of nudest beaches in France.
@Earl-of-Trumps
It is interesting that Spain is more casual about it than France, given that Spain is predominantly Catholic and France less so. Just goes to show, don’t judge a country by its religion alone.
Scandinavian countries are also pretty casual about public nudity.
@trev33 saidHave you been to any in France? I had some friends who over back some years ago and said it was a relaxing experience, and no big deal, no one even seemed to notice, although I am sure they did. 😉

@torunn saidIt's always worse in the US. For some reason people here love to get offended if you appear happier than they do.
We have some strange societal rules - people can hug but not kiss, we can laugh but not cry and some more perhaps.
@very-rusty saidNot in France but I have been to nudist beaches in Greece, Spain, Portugal and the only one i believe in Colombia (possibly the entire S. America, not sure about Brazil). It’s very relaxing, don’t tend to be busy beaches but people don’t really pay attention to others, for sure they look, we’re all human but no one really cares, it’s not a sexual thing.

@trev33 saidAside from specific nudist beaches it is more a generally relaxed attitude which seems healthier. In France you take your clothes off and put your swimming shorts on, in England you do some weird dance under a towel, fall over once or twice and fill your underwear with sand.

My wife says it is about not getting white lines. At risk of getting killed should she ever take up chess and read through my posts maybe it is also about a simple solution to dressing attractively. To some extent people want to dress to get noticed in other settings, so what's the difference?

@trev33 said“It’s not a sexual thing,” Yes, this is absolutely the critical observation. For some people, nudity is immediately associated, or even conflated, with sexuality, and therefore with shame and prudishness— whereas for others it isn’t. Bingo!

The moral of the French beach incident is this: the family which called the police to ask three women to cover up their bare breasts just taught their own children to conflate nudity with sexuality and taught them to be ashamed of both. That’s how to raise prudes. Whereas, if the children had looked at the bare breasted women and their parents had ignored it, the kids would have thought nothing of it and soon gotten interested in making sand castles instead.
@moonbus saidWe were all born naked, to be ashamed of it is just ridiculous, I haven't read the article, not sure why it turned into news by the sounds of it but in general if people had more tolerance for differences the world would be a much more harmonious place.

On the sexual point, I actually find a revealing bathing suit much sexier than a nudist, the nudist is just being free and enjoying the sun and sea without clothes, whereas I feel some who wear attractive bathing suits (men and women) almost want to be looked at in a sexualized way.
You're right though, parents do influence their kids but people can change as they grow and turn out with very different views as their parents.
@executioner-brand saidThis doesn’t explain Scandinavians’ casualness about nudity. They seem quite comfortable going into a public sauna naked.
the hotter it is the less people wear.

@very-rusty saidIt shouldn't be a sexual thing, but young men not used to the Swedish culture sometimes misunderstand and that creates unnecessary situations.

@very-rusty saidRusty, we can't accept that men do damage to young women just because they can't control their hormones.
Or hormones they have a problem controlling! 😉
