@Very-Rusty saidThe British soldiers saw the penguins and copied them. To this day generations of penguins still hate the British.

@Ghost-of-a-Duke saidWrong it was right here in Amerhst Nova Scotia, CATCH UP OLD CHAP!!!! 😛 😉
Ice hockey was invented by British soldiers. Catch up.
There does seem to be much contraversy over where it started.
Hockey originated in Canada, specifically evolving from various 19th-century stick-and-ball games like shinty, hurling, and bandy. The first formal, organized indoor game of ice hockey was played in Montreal, Quebec on March 3, 1875.
While Montreal hosted the first codified match, the broader origins of the game are highly debated and involve several key influences: Indigenous and Settler Influences: The Mi'kmaq Indigenous people of Eastern Canada played a traditional stick-and-ball game on ice and were renowned for carving early hockey sticks.
European immigrants adapted their native games (like Irish hurling) to Canada's freezing winters.Nova Scotia's Claims: Towns like Windsor and Dartmouth in Nova Scotia claim to be the birthplace of the sport, citing early 19th-century diary entries and literary references.
European Roots: The earliest ancestor of the game can be traced back to stick-and-ball games played in the British Isles (such as Scottish shinty) and ancient cultures in Egypt and Greece.
None of us were around to actually Know!!!! 😉 Seems everyone wants to claim being the first!!!

@Very-Rusty saidHey, Canada made it further than Germany, a 4 world cup winner, btw
Would you be comparing 5 cup winner Brazil with 1 cup winner England?
Netherlands Vs. Morocco later tonight, unfortunately Canada will get one of them. I think Canada are at the end of their run. Have they proven they can play with the big boys yet?

@Pondy, I feel for you!
@Ponderable saidI think it is a foul (sorry!).
Thank you all.
I did stay awake into the middle of the night to see the catastrophe...
In fact I wonder how the British see the "foul" before the Tah-goal.
The premier league (English league) has been plagued all last season with attacking players trying to block the goalkeeper from reaching the ball on corners and free kicks and it needs addressing. It's not football. American football maybe! I've not seen too much of it in the world cup but I'm happy to see it penalised and hope to see other leagues stamp it out too. Nothing against Germany and it was a great header.

There seems to be a lot of pushing and shoving going on, is this something that has always been allowed?
It is even obvious to newbie like myself watching, the goal tender is being interferred with.

@Ponderable saidOn TV the pundits were saying it was soft and shouldn't be a foul but they could see why it was given.
Thank you all.

Not a foul for me, German player was mostly just standing there and the contact was very slight. Not enough for the keeper to flap around... But he didn't complain after the goal. At least i didn't see it.
@Very-Rusty
Defenders have always manhandled each other and nothings been done but it's recently spread to goalkeepers and I think it's wrong. Attackers are playing the goalkeeper instead of the ball and that's not football.
