He was quite a good footballer, at times a brilliant goalscorer but not worthy of a place in the best ten footballers list.
NO WAY!

I'm sorry to say it but you don't distinguish a "good soccer player" from a "champion".

I wonder why when it comes about surveys amongst journalists and champions, about "Who's the greatest player of all times?", they always come with Pelè and Maradona (or viceversa) at top of the list.
ALWAYS

You have to understand, soccer isn't the most popular sport here in the States. I think the only football player most of us Yanks could identify would be Landon Donovan.

And I'm no different.

edit; I seriously doubt he's scored a "thousand" goals in top class games; or did you mean a thousand videos of the same few goals
....and this statement tells much about your criteria for choosing the "best" player.

Beckenbauer was clearly one of the greatest players of his time but was a defender and didn't scored often.

........and no,no one scored "thousand" goals in top class games.

Only Pelè and (maybe) Romario hit the thousand goals, but surely not in top class games, unless you consider the games of Pelè in NewYork Metrostars worthy of the title of "top class games".

Plus Pelè never played in Europe.

If he came to a club Europe be sure that he would have scored half of the goals he did.

Pele, Platini, Ronaldino...they're all good players.

But only God (although some of the English still refer to him as Maradona) had the style, the class, the sophistication, the politics and the ability to single handedly win a world cup...

And he has a tatoo of Che on his arm. That's gotta count for something.

So, he sniffs some cocaine every now and then? At least he's not down the boozer guzzling beer like most other players.
Well maybe he is...but he's God...he's entitled to.

It's like a top ten musicians' list without Mozart.

By the way it's Bobby Moore,Eusebio and Thierry Henry.
Maradona was a great player when he wanted to be. When he was on a sulk, for whatever reason, he was poor. Yes poor.

The true greats seldom have a bad game. Hence my list.

Also, to get into my list you have to have played top class football for a considerible length of time. And excelled consistantly. And that is the key word for me. Consistantly.

Maradona was also one of the first players to openly admit to and condone cheating.

IMO this diminished his greatness.

Now enjoy yourself correcting my spelling and grammar as to be honest I'm more interested in discussion than having a spelling bee!!

As my recollection goes, the "winning" goal of the 1966 world cup didn't actually cross the goal line...

It's funny how that's never brought up, yet God admits cheating and it's deemed wrong?

What? Oh. The English team at the time didn't know?
Well they could have said afterwards. But they didn't.

Owning up to your own failings is what makes one great!

Hahaha - very amusing. Wait, you're not serious are you?

maradonna was voted number 1 sporting cheat of all time recently.

And he doesn't consider that he cheated when he punched that goal in; accordimg to a video I saw last week he said he did the same regularly in the games he played in over the years.

Maradona, spell it right at least once in your life, for fu**'s sake!

Edit:you guys pretend to be soccer experts but you're not even able to spell correctly the name of players you're talking about.
