I really cannot fathom taking the life of another without even caring, let alone without going into a deep depression for what i've done. I only said i object to fighting.

you do not need to be fighting in your homland to defend it.
WWII, pearl harbour. Japan attacked the US. so the US took the war to japan, and the islands japan had taken over. then (i believe) they goverend over it for a few years until things settled down.
quite similar to the twin towers, no?
personally, i'm scared of the mental problems suffered after war, as opposed to the problems of killing...
