There's a whole lot of argument going on here but as far as I can tell no one has mentioned exactly what these new laws mean.

You can read for yourself here:
http://www.rules.house.gov/109/text/hr4437/109_hr4437_text.pdf

Here is a nice summary of the implications of the law:
http://www.ilrc.org/HR4437.php

Hope all you US citizens enjoy the fact that you can face imprisonment if you cannot present proof of your citizenship when pulled over for speeding. Land of the Free indeed.

Free to be a citizen....and all the privileges that come with citizenship. I remember travelling to Europe as a child and having to have a passport and some sort of ID carried with me at all times....seems we picked up some bad habits from Europe?

When was that? That wasn't the case when I was last in Europe (5 years ago). Was it just required when travelling between countries?

Basically, yes, but it seems becoming the European Union changed all that......but, yes, definitely travelling between countries

So you are comparing being required to have identification when travelling between countries to having to carry it at all times or face arrest?

All I can say is not to the HR4437 😛

Nobody in the US has to carry ID, so it is a moot point. If it comes down to national security, a simple Iris check would suffice, if they ever get the technology for the masses...

What do you mean by "not to the HR4437"? Is that where they deport illegal alians?...if so, you're misguided, and should be bitchin' at Vicente Fox for not bringing Mexico into the 21st century....

Under the proposed law you would be in danger of being detained indefinately and possibly deported unless you are carrying proof of legal residency/citizenship.

No big deal; I've been carrying a driver license in my wallet for 29 years....my military ID for the last 16 years. If you can't get legal ID in the USA, you don't belong here. That is the purpose of the whole idea.....

What ID did you carry around prior to turning 15?
