yes, stalin thought he could march over finland in a couple of weeks. they tried it from 39 to 44, but pretty much hit a wall and lost a couple of times more men than we did. then the nazis had to be driven out in 45. the war time pretty much explains the later violence, as people who have been killing other people in dark woods for 5-6 years, don't come back without problems.
