I'm flipping through the channels LAST NIGHT and I pause for a few minutes on an MTV show called Viva La Bam. I didn't really understand what was going on but these young kids spent the entire 5 minutes that I could stomach wrecking stuff and beating on each other. They smashed the windows on some homeless guy's trailer spewing glass all over him in his bed. They chopped off the roof of a car and drove into an otherwise pristine lake. Then, they pushed some other guys camper into the SAME lake. Finally, they built some 20 car shrine to the devil with a giant flaming pentagram on top.

All the while as they did damage to people, property, animals, and the environment they laughed and carried like what they were doing was somehow cool.

THEN THIS MORNING, as I left for work my wife was watching the Today show. They had an excerpt about an older guy who takes candy to the children in the cancer ward at Sloan Kettering every Friday Morning.

The Juxtaposition of these two events really caused me to think that maybe I am out of touch.

Sounds like a great show.

Yes, seeing that guy selflessly delivering candy to those unfortunate children reaffirmed my belief in the essential goodness of humanity.

I wish someone could explain the other to me.

How is giving candy to kids fun?

A flaming shrine to the devil sounds pretty cool, though.

Really?

What about the damage to property and the environment?

(Not really trying to start a fight, just curious how you and other's of your generation feel.)

I looked at your picture on your profile page and you looked young, about the same age as those kids on TV last night.

Why, am I misjudging your age?

So from watching one group of young kids doing some bad stuff on TV, and watching some elderly guy doing some great stuff, you have concluded that all young kids like doing bad stuff, and all elderly people like doing great stuff?

That's just a feeble attempt at an insult and doesn't really answer the question or add anything to the discussion.

But, if willfully damaging property, people, and the environment is the "in" things these days, I'll remain old-fashioned.

I guess so.
I haven't been referred to as a "kid" in a long time.
But then, maybe you're really old - it's all relative.

Another feeble attempt to draw me into an argument.

Not what I'm saying at all NorlysK. I'm saying I didn't understand this show, which obviously must have some appeal to young people if it's on MTV in Prime Time.

I did understand and was somewhat moved by the Today show snippet, which made me feel old.
