RN, I have given all this careful thought just like I do all my posts. All of ten seconds. Ten minutes for typing and spell checks and what I am recognising here is that the youth are victims of their environments. We can't say that they are any worse than ourselves. They act upon what they see. They see the adults involved in organised killings and war ...[text shortened]... mouths open in disbelief. When in Rome do as the Romans. Those kids are in the Rome we created.

This was not intended as a polymic (sp?) against youth. To a large extent it was a statement that I am older now and out-of-touch. I just don't get it.
That statement probably applies to these forums as well.
But, I also was saying that I'm happy that I don't get it.

I would say so.
That's good to hear. And I certainly didn't mean to imply otherwise. I'm sure there is lots of good and bad in all generations.
It's hard to clarify what I'm saying with limited space and time.
Let me try this way: I saw something on TV that I didn't understand how anyone could ever watch. I remember doing things and enjoy ...[text shortened]... uxtaposition of those two events made me feel old. Which is not necessarily a bad thing.
(I just had a similar discussion with my mum while trying to get her to watch 'I Spit on Your Grave' with me.)

I don't really think you are out of touch as you claim. I think you are a little wiser than you used to be maybe. All I was trying to do was Analise what has been taking place. You see we should always try to stay in touch or tune in to what is going on outside our protective shells. People say that they watch this stuff to make fun of it or make them feel better about them selves or whatever. Well, if that is what they think they need to do that then something is wrong with their own self esteem. Truth is, media outlets sell. They sell products and thought patterns. People imitate Art. It's the monkey see monkey do thing. They might not realise it. but it happens in their everyday lives. They will buy into the advertised name brands that they hear when cheaper less advertised brands may be as good if not better and in many cases are the same product but in a different container. (ask Slim Jim about this) As a trucker he sees how this stuff is manufactured and scamed out. I hear people all the time repeat the same old tired cliche over and over again. (myself includded) It gets drilled in their brains. Just like the Monkey see monkey do one I said earlier. And like the Love your neighbor one you say. People pick up on these thought patterns and don't even think where they come from. But they will copy it as if it is their own thoughts. Like songs that get stuck in you head and can't get it out. This stuff we see and hear is not as innocent as we might think. And it shouldn't be looked upon by the youth or anyone as it not effecting them. Maybe some of it doesn't effect them but some of it does. Some of this stuff does effect people around them and the things they laughted about might come back to them at a latter date from someone else who is only just laughing about your pain that they put you through by something they saw someone else do. Probably on television.

You have made me curious, though - what was that film or program about?

I went out of my way to re-clarify my point in an attempt to avoid any attacks.
I think you make some great points here. I think it is what we see and a lot of it is from TV. Also, I loved what you said about self esteem.
I think another factor may be isolation.
You mentioned video games and the internet in your earlier post. I think both of these and the the Tele tend to isolate us from the rest of society.
So, if your sitting at home playing one of the more violent video games and then you go into a chat room? I don't know for sure and I don't want to blame socieities problems on video games. As you say, it's a variety of factors.
I've been digesting your thoughts and trying to apply them to the gen forum. I don't understand why people were so crass about that poor girl who fell or jumped off her balcony. Reading through those posts was kind of shocking.
But, I think you probably came close when you said "monkey see monkey do!" Obviously, this is the culture of the forum. Culture happens and in the case of the gen forum, it is what it is, I guess.
Good luck to you my friend. Peace.
