Fair enough to say the team have a good chance, but the overriding mood I got from the English, (and highlighted by The Sun and other rags), was that England already had the Cup in the bag.
That either breathes complacency or increase in nerves. Neither are good for an athlete trying to perform. Fans getting on their backs when they don't walk all over opposition as predicted doesn't help either, as more nerves are added.

England "have the talent to win the World Cup" only to the extent that quite a few others teams do as well. Bigger shocks happen - Greece winning Euro '04 for instance - but you wouldn't put money on it.

You have to feel sorry for McClaren. Lambasted for not dropping Robinson, drops him and his replacement duly throws the ball into the net with his first touch.
England were useless tonight. They were spineless in the first half lacking any kind of urgency or leadership. Beckham improved things a lot when he came on. He takes a lot of criticism, but in fairness he is a bit of a hero. Pity the middle pair were too useless to get to ball to him much.
Gerrard strikes me more and more as a "highlights" man. Does nothing throughout a game, but 1 moment of brilliance makes him look like a star in a 2 minute highlight section. His sliding block on the ball out to the free Croatian wide left in acres of space was about the only thing he did well.
Richards isn't ready for international football yet by tonight's showing. Constantly out of position, both defensively and offensively (making more runs into the centre ahead of the ball than out wide). G Neville would have made a huge difference there tonight.
Lescott looked weak in the air. Joe Cole tried to do too much with the ball on a terrible surface. Barry was anonymous.
England played a bit of footbal in the second half to get back into it, but then could have gone down 2 more nearly immediately. When they did go down, they completely stopped playing football, preferring to play easily defendable long straight balls up to the front 3, effectively playing Beckham out of the game.
I reckon even Ireland could have beaten England on tonight's showing.
