U.S. Border Patrol agent Dora Doyle holds a rock wrapped in a gasoline-soaked rag. She says migrants light them on fire and throw them at agents or fling them into brush across the border to distract the officers.

All Things Considered, January 23, 2006 · Tensions between the United States and Mexico remain high after the shooting death of an illegal immigrant at the border last month. The incident comes as the U.S. Congress prepares to debate a proposal to build a new 700-mile fence along the border -- a plan some Mexican commentators have likened to the Berlin Wall.

U.S. agent Dora Doyle says patrolling the border region has become increasingly dangerous. Standing at the steel fence separating San Diego from Tijuana, Doyle pulls out a rock covered in a gasoline-soaked rag, which she says migrants lit on fire and hurled across the border.

Doyle says tensions along the border clearly have escalated. Assaults against agents have doubled since last year. And just since October, there have been more than 80 incidents involving agents.

U.S. officials say a rock-throwing incident sparked the confrontation that lead to the Dec. 30 shooting death of 20-year-old Guillermo Martinez Rodriguez. San Diego police investigating the shooting say Martinez was part of a group of migrants trying to scale a border fence.

Investigators say when the Border Patrol tried to intervene, Martinez threw a rock, nearly missing an agent's head. The agent then fired his gun. Border Patrol officials allege Martinez was a smuggler with a history of past arrests.

But Agustin Martinez says he was with his brother that night and that no rocks were thrown. He says the agent shot his brother in the back as they were running away.

The shooting sparked widespread condemnation in Mexico, and newspapers covered the story daily. President Vicente Fox ordered a full investigation and even sent Washington a diplomatic note.

Agustin Martinez says he wants his government to continue pressuring the U.S. about the shooting and to make sure the agent who shot his brother is punished. Officials in both Mexico and the U.S. say their investigations continue.

And yeah, in the other side of the coin there are U.S. arrogant policies against almost all the countries in the world... seed arrogance, harvest hatred.

I feel bad for all the North Americans that will suffer in flesh because of their government.

You see the typical U.S. arrogance? The Soviet empire was as nasty as the U.S. empire is now.

The difference resides only in more subtle ways of imperalistic repression and brainwashing.

I don't think I judged you as a person, chancre. I said it would be a down-hill trip to move from germany and become an american citizen. From what I can tell, being an american immigrant (yes, almost all of you are immigrants but immigrant immigrant) is not all that peachy (sorry, peach).

The US are treating their citizens worse and worse (which is only natural considering how many enemies the US has made in the world these past thirty or so years), so it's not a place I'd want to live in at the moment. You as a person I don't know anything about, so I apologize if you feel like I judged you when I spoke about the US government the way it seems to work in reality.

If you feel I'm wrong about the US provide me with facts that shows how benevolent and gracious the US government is to its people and those who comes in from the outside. Then I may change my mind about it. By throwing ridiculous comments about the beautiful Swedish weather and what you'd like to think of the general swede you're only wasting both our time.

{Oh, and aryan people are actually the people living in the middle east (persians and the like). Hitler and his scientists was confused on so many levels it's ridiculous. True, the odds are high that a lot of europeans actually are descendants of aryans, but still - Hitler was wrong just for thinking that race actually matters.}

{And wall street is hardly a measure on the greatness of a nation. It only shows that the most greedy people in the world live there. The US has major problems with poverty and internal politics. I couldn't care less about the minority of US citizens who control the country with their money.}

Do the research yourself about how gracious the US is to its illegals. For one, we don't send them back! They can get free education for their children, which is a strain on the school systems in many states. You didn't affect me personally, so no apology necessary, thanks just the same. I don't disagree that the US is THE best place to live in the world. I've been to Europe many times (mother was from Italy), and I often thought that I liked the laid back lifestyle of the Euros compared to the hard-driving worker-bee mentality of the average American worker. Yes, my gov't ain't perfect. And if you read my profile, it exp[lains it. I can't openly deride my gov't because I serve in the military. You are correct that the middleclass in America is a "last on the list" item for many politicians and that CEOs making 40,000,000 dollars a year while they lay workers with families off the job is scadalous....Capitalism is great when you cancel the "greed factor", but it seems that it has become epidemic; however, one can, and still does, make the American dream a reality by smarts and hard work...I'm afraid that we are becomimg a nation of rich and, if not poor, then lower middle-class, and absorbing millions of illegals and legals with no education is hurting the middleclass even more. If lazuy Americans don't want to get out and pick lettuce at a decent wage, kick them off welfare. My father plowed cotton behind a mule in the 30s when there wasn't any welfare. The US does a lot of good and bad, but when the bad is maginified and the good is minimized, then I feel I have to speak up. I apologize for stereotyping Swedes and you. I've never been to Sweden, and I'm sure you have a good living standard per capita. I didn't vote for Bush either, so I'm not a Republican nor Democrat, but yes, the greedy few do control a lot of my tax money and it sucks.....so, I apologize if I offended you. Cheers....

Not really. I'm only 25 and already a homeowner and making very good salary. I work hard and proud of what I have accomplished. Put myself thru college while working part-time so I never had to rely on government hand-outs. You see there are no rewards here for free-loaders. Work ethic (which I doubt you have) of the people here is what makes this country ...[text shortened]... an your country , so you might just as well stay in Sweden because you will never make it here.
Are you trying to imply that having a home, a good job and a good education are impossible in countries which look after their sick/unlucky/old?

Lets look at your scenario, and some possible alternative endings.
1 - Real life america): you work hard: you achieve a good education, get a good job and have your own home at 25 (you don't mention your debt levels, so we'll assume that you have paid off your mortgage already). Possible
1 - Real life state which looks after sick/unlucky people): you work hard: you achieve a good education, get a good job and have your own home at 25. Possible.

2 - Real life america): you want to work hard. you are halfway through getting your degree, but get a debilitating disease (or lose an arm while working) and so are unable to pay your way through university by working anymore. You fall behind in payments for your education, eventually being kicked off your course for being unable to pay your way. With no education, and 1 arm, you have no option but to buy a trailer, and watch tv (cheapest activity) the rest of your life, while eating the cheapest, most processed food you can get your hands on. This leads to obesity and the inevitable health problems. You can't afford health insurance and so you lose your trailer. Once you are homeless, you have no more money to pay for health care, so you can no longer treat your illness. You die a very painful, lonely death, after all your "friends" abandoned you due to your financial problems.
2 - Real life state which looks after sick/unlucky people)
you want to work hard. you are halfway through getting your degree, but get a debilitating disease (or lose an arm while working) and so are unable to pay your way through university by working anymore. You state your case to the government, who recognise you as a smart member of society who got unlucky. They award you with a grant so that you are able to finish your education. You are now 25, have a good job with a good salary. Own your own home and have a good education. Ie: Everything is the same, except you are down 1 arm.

I don't understand how people can be proud of this great american dream, which can easily (and does) become a nightmare to famillies who suffer 1 moment of very bad luck. State hand outs aren't necessarily for people who don't want to work hard, they are there for people who want to work and get along in life, but for whatever reason, need some assistance at some point in their life.

Its funny that people like yourself complain about money going to help people get out of a hole, but I've never heard 1 of you guys complain about the hundreds of billions of dollars given to the military to start illegal wars and make hundreds of thousands of other people's lives misery. Instead of money being taken from you, the tax payer's pocket to be given to the needy, your tax payers money is instead going to the pockets of the rich and powerful who own the arms manufacturers and oil corporations. This you accept 100%, which is worrying.

I was wondering about this the other day.

Why is it that the people fighting for freedom of speech around the world, are themselves denied that right?

I can't find how many americans are employed by the u.s. government, but I would assume in a bureaucratic, highly-militarised state such as yours, the figure would run into the millions.

Does that mean that none of the government employees are allowed freedom of speech?

Did you even read stocken's post to which I made that reply to? Stocken said that the American dream is just that and then continue to mock someone who would actually work to realize his/her dream. So please don't take my post out of context.
