By the look of the last turn, it hardly matters, you slaughtered him and got Jerusalem!

Hello there,
Apologies for interrupting your thread, but I was wondering if any of the experienced players would be able to assist me with a query regarding this game.
If you have a reasonably defended town, level 5, with about 300 CS, with enemies on your border totalling around 800-1000 CS, would it be better to spend all your gold on troops or would it be worthwhile upgarding the defenses as well?
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer, also thanks for this thread, it was here I came across the game & I am thoroughly enjoying it. I hope to join an RHP game at some time in the future if possible.
Cheers

Originally posted by RabisuNeither option. That ~900 CS force can take the city and your intended purchases will fail to occur. I'd either retreat the army, or if the enemy's losses would be great enough, I'd let it sit there and die and spend my money at the next town in line to be attacked.

Assuming the level 5 fort is filled to capacity and your garrison is entirely infantry, your 300 CS army could potentially turn into a 450 CS army and gain about 20 HP due to the fortification bonus. That boost might be enough to make the enemy's losses worse than your own. Of course it depends on the precise makeup of that 300 CS army.

Two siege engines counter one fort level. The fort levels have no upkeep. Fortifications aren't great, but it's not THAT bad a difference.

EDIT - 1 fort level costs 14, not 15.
Also there's the fact that Siege Engines are slow; if they're not in position, the fortress walls can hold off an attack for several years. And with an upkeep of 0.2, the two Siege Machines will cost more than the fort upgrade after 5 years.
