I have achieved incompetence, two turns in a row, I'm afraid.
I have learned something new about the game, lads. If you set your cavalry to retreat level 1, they will not retreat if defending a garrison, or at least not Novgorod. The plan was for my 25 Crusader Knights to hit for two rounds and retreat somewhere, but they blithely stuck around and to ...[text shortened]... T: Oh, good gosh. Why is Riga is STILL mine? Castile, do you have "accept gifts" blocked?

Following this season, the Great Khan will turn power over to a constitutionally elected parliament and retire to his yurt in the country to write his memoirs. You may go through the pointless exercise of grinding down the Mongol armies, but you will never defeat the Great Khan.
The alternative version--Christians, Moslems and Hungarian devil-worshippers alike rejoice as the Mongol hordes are hurled back into the benighted wilderness where they were spawned. Now who will be the next Pope?!

Applause.

Nope, still accepting them as I was in Norway. I've no idea why that didn't work. Perhaps there's a programming bug in the Baltic...
The order to transfer Riga is not there. Again. My apologies. Again. I wish I could use the Bosse excuse and claim inebriation, but you'd have thought I could have sobered up in two weeks, right?

If you have defeated me then why is the game still going? If the game is still going then I must not have been defeated.
I fully expected to lose all the infantry in our battle in Novgorod; they were at retreat level 5 in the garrison and going nowhere. The cavalry (25 Crusader Knights) was given retreat level 1 and I had hoped they would retreat after bloodying your nose for two combat rounds. Simple ignorance cost me those cavalry, but 19 of them are going to be purchased in Riga next turn. When it comes right down to it, I can afford to replace my greater losses more than you can afford to replace your lighter losses. This is because I have allies (or did before muffing the Riga transfer again).
We did (sniff) lose General Halfogre in that battle, however.
Originally posted by rwingettAfter two failed "attempts", that is what I, were I Castile, be thinking. Aquitaine's decision to help Castile move a large number of cavalry into Riga would then be puzzling, but no more so than Aquitaine granting passage rights to Riga.
Perhaps Aquitaine has no intention of giving you Riga and is merely playing you for the fool.
No, Great Khan, the desperate, last-gasp and feeble diplomatic ploy you wanted to go with was "Castile, Aquitaine's ineptitude is holding you back from the glory you so richly deserve."
Originally posted by treetalkThe Byzantines can almost certainly take Egypt from the Mamelukes on turn one. I've done it and was fortunate enough that the Mameluke player attempted to build new units only in Egypt. As a result he had only Barca left as a build center and no additional units. The second turn, I took Barca. The Mamelukes not only failed to build any units, I captured two of their ships.
I just started a game and was wondering if any of you have had success striking at a neighbour right from the word go ...
I took Jutland on the first turn from the Danes, playing as Norway, in a veterans' game.
In each case, the victims were completely non-communicative with me (until they got their second turns).
