If this hasn't been answered yet, the answer is: Retreat level tells the army to retreat when the appropriate rank first becomes empty. To change it, you need to use the drop down menu; for some reason typing the number in doesn't work.
Hmmm, actually, after having looked at the rules it appears that that button (Retreat Level) *is* where you set the combat rank, from 1 (front rank) to 5 (reserves). The problem is that when I tried it just now (I tried to set the rank to 3) it set the rank to 0. Then I tried setting it to 1, and it set the rank to 0 again.
So I still don't know what's up with that.

Don't sweat it, chump, you won't be around for five turns, let alone thirty.
You can visit whatever hardships you want on your citizens, but it was never stated that no one would ever upgrade. Assuming I get to eight provinces, I fully intend to do so. The difference doesn't become really significant until you start getting up to about a dozen provinces ...[text shortened]... handicapped by your fiscal woes. Perhaps it is I who should be offering you the loan now.
An early prediction that has not come true.
Who were the three winners in your last game? What kingdoms?

The Teutonic Order (royalty)
The Byzantine Empire (commoner)
I had been allied with Castile for a long time, but he turned on me. I finished the game intact, but not amongst the winners. I was France, by the way.
Originally posted by Bosse de NageThe only way to tell is to see who has a Commander and/or has annexed more than 7 provinces. Bavaria, The Golden Horde, Hungary and Morocco have Commanders, so they're all obviously Royalty. Lithuania, the Mamulukes, Poland, Roum and Saxony all have more than 7 provinces, but none of them have annexed more than 7 so if they've become Royalty, they're playing it close to the vest. They're no way of telling with the other nations, but if they have they're not getting any bang for their 2 bucks.
So...who's forked out to become royalty in this game?
