The point is of course, such an occurrence can happen in 'any' family and the question can easily be our own. Experience has taught me that suicidal thought 'can' be present in people who give no outward sign what they are going through internally. We might like to distance ourselves from suicide and think it happens to people far removed from ourselves, but despair or mental health issues can happen to anyone.

Like I said. "Mental illness" is almost certainly the answer. Have they really gone "several decades" wondering whether it wasn't because of mental illness?

What synonym for "superstition" do you suggest I use? I am using it to mean a belief in a supernatural realm and supernatural processes that contradict science. I think it's the spot on word. What word means the same thing but isn't "offensive and disrespectful" in your opinion?
