In the section for discussion only we have four pictures at the moment: A Boat, Escalators, Feet, and Tivoli. Comments are very welcome. You can also still add pictures to this section if you want.
Please don't vote for your own entries. Voting is obligatory for everybody who has entered this round, and of course it is open to everybody else as well. Remember, it's your last chance to vote in a regular round of the photo comp!
Comments and discussions are not only allowed, but encouraged right from the start. I would like everybody to say something about their favourite picture. Feel free to comment on other pictures as well. The names of the photographers will not be revealed until the voting is over.
Voting will close on Sunday, 9th September, 20 UT. After this round, we'll have the Grande Finale, where people can vote for the winner of all rounds.
If you have questions, complaints or ideas, send me a PM. You can also contact me at rhpphotocomp@gmail.com
Enjoy!
We'll also have a competition for the Detective of the Round again, hopefully with some more detectives than in the last round (where I announced this way too late). This is how it works: Make a list of the pictures and whom you think to be the photographer. Send your guesses to me (by PM or email). The detective who got the highest number of pictures right wins the Detective Award. Here's a list of participants and the number of pictures they contributed:
Pawnhandler (3)
AThousandYoung (1)
pinkthunder (3)
Gatecrasher (3)
Wheely (3)
Ragnorak (3)
Niallone (3)
DdV (3)
Nordlys (3)
Nice round. Quite hard to judge. I may be mistaken, but I don't think there is any knock-out shot that will run away with things. I didn't always get the impression of motion with some shots. While others certainly conveyed motion, but to the detriment of the picture.
1st - 10 pts - 12 - Merry-Go-Round - Great photo that best captures the topic
2nd - 8 pts - 14 - Perpetual motion - Beautiful silkiness in the motion of the water
3rd - 6 pts - 1 - A bright future - Not sure its quite "motion" but it sure is a beautiful photograph.
4th - 5 pts - 22 - Whirly - Remember something like this in a earlier round. Very Effective.
5th - 4 pts - 2 - Almost there. Is it motion? I dunno, but it is a terrific shot. Don't fancy climbing those.
6th - 3 pts - 23 - Bathing - A really soppy shot, but I liked it!
7th - 2 pts - 5 - Far Away Fields - Nice billboard contrast to the concrete jungle.
8th - 1 pt - 11 - Will land on his shadow. - Really, I don't know how the photographer can be so certain, the sun could go behind a cloud at any moment.
All great pics... every one.
1st - 10 pts - Bathing (it just makes me smile)
2nd - 8 pts - Chronology (The lights and colours are amazing)
3rd - 6 pts - A Bright Future (Just a classic shot)
4th - 5 pts - Drip (would not be out of place in a gallery)
5th - 4 pts - Merry-Go-Round (Its like the girl is frozen in time)
6th - 3 pts - Whirly (Both the headlight and the rear lights :o) )
7th - 2 pts - Perpetual Motion (Just makes you want to be there)
8th - 1 pt – Almost There (It captures everything)
Ok, here goes my standard novel for what it's worth. I think one problem with this round is it could be considered exactly the same as the "extended exposure" round we had earlier as is evidenced but the fact that we are seeing some images again. I do realise though that some people have shown movement without the extended exposure.
As we now have a competition to see who can guess the photographer I have the problem of hiding my own identity when commenting. I can either choose to comment on my own shots as well as all the others or not comment on every shot as I usually do. As I ramble on enough as it is, I thought I'd just reduce the number of shots comment on.
1) A bright future.
This clearly is a beautiful shot with a nice conversion to B&W. I love the extreme exposure on the doors and love the idea. I wish I'd thought of this at the wedding I did recently. I'd have been tempted to keep some saturation in the outdoor scene to accentuate the new world but think it is much better how this photographer has done it. Whilst I love the shot and can see what is meant here with movement, I still can't really fit this into the subject of the round as much as I'd like.
2) Almost there
Another lovely picture with another good B&W conversion. I struggle a little with the church being skewed while the stairs are nicely straight but I guess getting them to build the thing properly would have been a tough ask. I, again, find it difficult to completely fit this shot with the subject.
3) Chronology
I like this one. Not only do we get the movement of the pendulum, we also get the implication of a move through time. I mostly like the composition a lot though perhaps would chop off the top where it includes the weights. I really like the angle the shot was taken from too.
4) Far Away Fields
Nice idea and nice moment to have captured. Lacks a bit of punch for me though and I'm not sure why. Could be the exposure or it might be that the advertisement is a bit on the blue side instead of looking inviting.
6) Dance
Certainly movement here and the shot works for me. It's bit noisy, possibly due to the post lighting adjustment. I'd have liked a wider aperture to get some blur in the background and make the audience a little less distracting but never the less, I like this one. Prefer the colour version to the Sepia one.
8) Drip
Nice composition and colour on this one but, in my view at least, it would have benefitted enormously from the use of a tripod though perhaps there has been some stabilization used and it's just that the focus is bit off. I like the drip itself particularly. It looks a bit ghostly.
11) Will Land on His Shadow
I like this and I like the title too.Nice to have got the shadow directly in between the posts but I guess that would be tough to achieve. In an age of sharpness and cleanliness, I like the sensor noise on this one. It gives it some "grit" to the shot. Be good B&W in my opinion.
12) Merry-Go-Round
Confuses the hell out of me this one. How is it possible to have the girl's face so sharp yet the rest of her blurred. It's also odd that the horses head is sharp too. There is no evidence of flash which might have helped achieve this effect. However, that is what we have. For me this makes it technically very interesting shot. It is very well done and a very enjoyable too. Good one.
15) Piranha
What a fantastic shot! I really like this one. I love the colour and the movement. Great shot.
17) Second Sight
I would like to see the clearer pictures the photographer mentions.
18) Reflections on a Slow Motion Morning
A lovely picture and a genuinely original view of the wheel which is incredibly refreshing to see. I think there is a slight cast on the shot though and would like to see that cleaned up a bit. Top notch shot in my view though struggle to see the movement here(I know the wheel moves but not so you'd actually notice).
20) Spinning Top
Like this. Nice separation of subject from background and a very pleasing subject.
23 Bathing
Clearly a great capture. Not entirely sure of the exposure or the relevance to the round but there's something very engaging here. Composition is great and the water action is pretty cool 🙂
24) Shadow
I have no idea what this is but I think its my favourite of the round. The noise adds to the shot. It's action, it's interesting and with the right frame and printed big would be great on the wall.
My votes go like this.
1st - 10 pts - 24) Shadow
2nd - 8 pts - 15) Piranha
3rd - 6 pts - 12) Merry-Go-Round
4th - 5 pts - 4) Chronology
5th - 4 pts - 20) Spinning Top
6th - 3 pts - 16) Sea Dragon
7th - 2 pts - 23) Bathing
8th - 1 pt - 6) Dance
I missed out the beautiful shots that I struggled to fit into the subject.

It's an effect called panning. Read about it here: http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/mastering-panning-to-photograph-moving-subjects/
Originally posted by NordlysWell I know about panning. However, the thing that amazes me is the small area of sharpness. The face is perfect. However, I am surprised that given how the rest of the child and indeed the horse are moving the same as the face, I'd expect them to be pretty sharp too.

Given this thing is going around and up and down at the same time, this shot shows excellent panning technique in my view. Much better than I've ever achieved.
Originally posted by NordlysWhilst I agree that you have to move to walk up stairs, the shot isn't about movement for me. The shot is a powerful one because of the contrasts. The small modern figures on the enormous old stairs. To me it's more solitude, grandeur or time. It conveys many things but movement isn't one of them for me. As they are my comments and my vote I feel what I get from the images are pretty important in this context.
Another reply to Wheely:
"In what way is walking out a door/climbing steps not movement/motion?
We had an extended exposure round already, so I didn't see the need to only included long exposures to capture the movement in the photo.
Thanks for your comments."
A similar thing can be said, for me at least, about "A bright future". It has the actual physical movement of walking through a door AND it has the more abstract movement from one life to another. Maybe I was a little too hasty with that one but never the less, for me, the image conveyed something other than movement at the time.
I hope nobody felt I was chastising anyone; we all interpret things differently and some of my shots in previous rounds have been considered "off topic" by others when I felt they weren't. That's only because I felt a particular way about them which others didn't.
I do get the point about not requiring long exposures for this round and some of the shots that particularly appealled to me e.g. "Dance" and "Will Land on His Shadow" are not.
I'm very grateful for the responses to my comments this round though as they take a while to consider and to write and it's nice if they prompt a discussion. That's the only reason to write the critiques in my view.
