Comments:
1st - really like this shot, the first time I ever thought about what it'd be like to be part of the game
2nd & 3rd - nice pictures
4th - really clever take on the theme - the team photo before the big game. still chuckling... where was this taken?
5th - again clever interpretation of the theme. I have sneaky suspicion the same person entered En Passant which is also a clever pic.
6th - I love the pic Nighthawks, and this reminded me of that in the thumbnail view, but then in the picture (with comment) all becomes clearer! Very clever post production 🙂
One of the best rounds so far.

Foreshadowing mate is a good shadow shot. I tried some myself for this round, but it didn't work out. This one looks good though, nice composition.
Your move is an interesting take on this subject, though it's rather weird to see it floating in the air like that
Regicide has nice lighting, well done to do this with sunlight. I never manage to persuade the sun to shine how I want it. Seems like a nice chess set too, by the way
I like how the background matches the setup and the theme in royal perspective. Good composition, I like the two blurred pawns on the foreground.
e4 looks good, and I like how only one pawn is in focus. But I think it's very confusing to have part of the front pawn in focus too.
Too bad nighthawk is not sharp, it would have ended up higher on my list if it was.
Well done everybody, it's amazing how many good pictures we already got to see in these competitions.

I don't know why I liked some more than others. I knew what my top three choices were but had a tough time deciding on the winner. I think I penalized "En Passant" for the only-slight chess connection.

I must have gone back and forth between 1st and 2nd place ten times.
Edit: I had to switch 1st and 2nd around. AARRRGH. 🙂 'Timebank Running' makes me wonder, and I like that.

I love Adjournment, it is so elegant with the lighting, the glasses, background colours. Classy the way a good game of chess is. Is that a bottle of Glen Fiddich on the right?

(Oh well, replying to a retorical question seems much natural than another BUMP)

I see that I screwed this up last night, sorry, Nordlys. This is what I meant. Some nights I can't even cut & paste correctly.
And yes, Gatecrasher, you're right, its not Glenfiddich, but I still would like to know what it is when the round is done. 😀 Unless you know?
Edit: Nordlys, I had Royal Perspective in there twice.

taking the liberty to add a context for voting ...
quiet night, alone in the flat with a laptop, Irish whiskey, and Mozart.
If the voting were done tomorrow with the usual din in the background, it may be completely different.
All of the submissions were excellent this time. This ballot feels like a disservice to the photographers not mentioned... you have captured the essence of the game we love.
per Nordlys suggestion, I will comment on my favourite - Timebank Running. Like so many of the players on this site, I have played chess in more differing environments than I can count. This picture captures that for me and frankly takes me back to places I want to be taken back to - thank you.
as always - thank you Nordlys for taking the time to do this.

Bon Vivants is a well prepared and framed composition with mood character and colour. The depth of field and layers draw you in surberbly. Whiskey vs Brandy? It sets the invironment for chess and I can almost smell my uncles pipe smoke lingering…. Love this image. brilliant
Royal Perspective is sharp with good honest dof , well framed and nicely composed. A little downward soft ambient light would have set it off even more. By giving more shape to the pieces.. might not too?
Foreshadowing Mate.. Nice idea well executed.. think I would have preferred rich colours but that’s just me.
G v E.. Sometimes capturing the moment says it all..ie the shot has a lovely pleasing composition and content but the lighting contrast and dof aren’t right.. but the content wins through with a tick. Try a lower dof or closer cropping?? I sniggered too just wondering whether the young models are enjoying the chess or have been cadjouled? :0  lol
Taking lessons.. ditto as g v e but the doggy looks more interested hahaha
I’m harder here but hopefully fair… Regicide is a dramatic high contrast bw close up with a nice theme and clear sharpness but is isn’t balanced and has too much space to the left it cost this shot five places.
His own enemy.. it’s an unusual crop but a top NZ photography lecturer judged at our club.. (I got caned) He said (roughly) that “with still life you must either go for dof or have everything totally sharp.. no excuses or in-betweens because the item isn’t moving so use a tripod and get it sharp”
I like the eveness of your shot and clarity of the reflection and the shadow isn’t to distracting.. you may not have needed to sharpen this.
The last comment probably sums up why some shots didn’t get my vote.. 1 & 2 have patches of sharp focus and blur through the shots which spoilt them for me..
The chequered shots were well done.. love the burger king one but they didn’t quite bring out the the theme for me.
