who knew?

i'm reading Newsweek about the hurricane and it boggles my mind how this issue of poverty in America has gone seemingly unnoticed by a vast portion of the population.

i mean, it's good that people are becoming aware of a significant problem, but damn, it's like the people who keep posting things like "what happened to Ironman?"

yes, many many people are staggeringly poor in America. i mean, try paying rent and buying food and clothes on minimum wage is nearly impossible. forget having a car or health insurance, or flood insurance in case your house gets washed away... MacDonalds dollar menu it is.

and the article quoting these stupid white people who blame the people who got trapped in their homes for not having the means to escape. are people really that sheltered?

is this an American thing where we blame poor people for the cyclical devestation of their own poverty?

my cynical American prediction is that this new "awareness" might launch an equally loathsome "WAR ON POVERTY"...

America likes to declare War on things... i'm surprised the US peace movement isnt called War on War.

Where did you get that number? It's a far cry from the 12% listed at:

So poor they've got to eat the cheap MacDonalds? I think there's some skewed values here.
Poor is when you don't know *what* you're going to eat, let alone where you're going to eat.

i did know this. i'm surprised at Other People's surpirse. i'm from Philadelphia and i've lived in several major cities since then and some are better at hiding it, but its always there... just go down to the bus station. i just can't believe that people are "waking up" to this problem. it fills me with trepidation as to what will happen when people "wake up" one day without oil. why can't problems be dealt with properly BEFORE a major catastrophe serves to highlight the issue? eat drink, be merry is all well and good until we're fighting hand to hand over a pint. and i want that pint, damnit.

Hmmm, true.

Maybe I read that over 50% of Americans were too poor to have internet access in their home. To be honest, I'm not too sure. 50% stuck in my mind wherever I read it though.

Hi Rag! Maybe you were thinking of the well-know statistic:

50% of Americans live above the fat @rse line??

There's a theory it has something to do with diet, but I wouldn't be sure.

a year or two ago the s.f. chronicle had a series on some homeless people in s.f. ... tracked them for awhile .... if they got a little money from begging, they'd spend it on crack, etc. ... some died from flesh-eating bacteria due to dirty needles ...

i don't think you could "cure" them without suspending their civil liberties for quite a long while ... rehab is a long hard road even if you buy into it, and if you don't, then what?
