a year or two ago the s.f. chronicle had a series on some homeless people in s.f. ... tracked them for awhile .... if they got a little money from begging, they'd spend it on crack, etc. ... some died from flesh-eating bacteria due to dirty needles ...
i don't think you could "cure" them without suspending their civil liberties for quite a long while ... rehab is a long hard road even if you buy into it, and if you don't, then what?

i think mandatory education should be extended to age 40, for people who don't get it the first time around ... til they get it right ... if you need a welfare check then you need more education to go with it ... and formal, not just a few classes in job-seeking skills ...
and spend less resources teaching people in economics, history, etc., at both the college and high school level, and more teaching EVERYONE home economics, life skills, .... make those mandatory in pre-college education .... shop class turned into shop career path, with trained teachers, rather than the football coaches teaching it on the side ... (that excludes auto shop which cannot get away with that even in current environment ...) ...

Speaking of tv, so I was like, watching the like O.C. the other like day with my friend Kelly, and she was like Ohmahgod, where are all the like poor people in this show, and all up in my face about the like social injustice, or something... whatever!, so then I was like so like ohmahgod, whatever, talk to the hand and stuff, Kelly, it's not as if I want to watch them while my Puerto Rican servant is giving me a pedicure, that would be like so gross and stuff, and would totally put me off my cinnamon croissant and low-fat decaf hazelnut latte, and besides, so many of those people tend to be ugly, not to mention they like have totally shabby nails...
So, I totally agree. poor people so suck.

Maybe they should be drowned? There's a solution ...
Better put a smiley on this 8-)
What about the Kyoto Agreement? Wouldn't your theory like totally waste water supplies? You've so got to think of the enviroment, Bill, and give a little back to the world.
I like am like totally in favour of hanging, drawing and quartering for people whose income is under 25 K and stuff. We could so totally make the rope from hemp.
Smiley face:π
And I'm like so totally out of here. Ciao!

Over 50% of the american populace live below the poverty line.

I will explain again that we have 15,000,000 illegal aliens and millions more recently arrived from 3rd world countries with minimal skills, except the will to work hard making minimum wage, that likely skew those statistics. I will admit that the gap between rich and poor is widening, and that is disturbing, but that is one of the major flaws of a Capitalist sysytem...Fatcat CEOs making zillions annually makes no sense; sports figures making millions for tossing a ball thru a hoop while school teachers have to buy school supplies with their meager wages....America is phuked-up in many ways, as is Europe...look at your unemployment rate.....the gap between rich and poor is less in Europe, which I admire, but one has a better chance of REALLY getting ahead in America if he/she is willing to work hard, save money, and be frugal....you people can take a month vacation with pay, and get a King's ransome for welfare, but does Europe rival America in Entrepreneurial opportunities? Maybe so....Yeah, America has a poverty problem that's worse than Europe, but we are also "freer" to choose to remain mired in poverty as many people do as a result of drugs, immoral upbringing, no work-ethic instillment, etc.....I see many obviously healthy people holding up signs at intersections saying they will work for food, yet when you tell them that you have yard work available, they develop back problems....from standing on the corner all day holding up a sign......by the way the poverty level in the US, according to that socialist rag is 12.7%...up from 12.5%.
