you see the weak dogs (of which there are many) would be killed off pretty soon if all cats and dogs were left to fend for themselves. then with no weak dogs left, not dismissive of cannibalism the stronger dogs would turn on the not so strong dogs (btw, cats out run dogs and they can climb trees....forget about dogs whipping out the cat population) and of co ...[text shortened]... cats living nearby, they got along just fine.
just admit it, cats are the superior species.
We once had a cat that would chase any dogs that ventured on the property. It was quite a comical site, and I want you to know dogs can run pretty fast also. This cat actually beat up a few dogs in the neighbourhood. It is hard not to laugh like hell when your neighbour calls you complaining about your cat beating up his dog!

according to Animal Planet the top 10 smartest animals (excluding humans) are:
1. Chimpanzee
2. dolphin
3. orangutan
4. elephant
5. crow
6. pig
7. squirrel
8. pigeon
9. octopus
10. rat
dogs and cats didn't even make the top ton
VR and the way I see it. π
tough question and many valid points raised. Generally i think dogs are smarter because they can do a number of jobs for humans (cats are treated more like a child i think in some cases).
Here are some jobs that dogs are used for (none of which i have seen done by a cat)
1. Sniffer dog (as mentioned already)
2. Rescue dogs (Mountain searches, etc)
3. Guide Dogs
4. Sheep Dog and other jobs on the farm
Whether this makes dogs smarter or not can be open to intrepretation - but i prefer them to cats lol
But dogs can be more trusting than cats which can be a downfall as they might go over to someone who would hurt them (this does vary from species to species).
Anyway - last question - who is the cat version of Lassie?

I've never seen a cat chase a car.
Yet I have seen many more dead cats on the streets and highways than dead dogs. I'm still working on how that happens.
Maybe it's an attitude thing with cats. They just stroll out in front of a car with the assumption that they rule, and that the car will just automatically stop and wait while they continue on ...[text shortened]... se a car, but smart enough to not get in front of it and expect that it will stop for them.
Dogs are more dependent. Dogs usually are kept on a line. And if running lose the owner would (/should) keep an eye on it.
Therefor I think there are probably way more cats walking by/crossing streets and highways. Then its not so wierd more of them get killed.
So I dont think you can use that as a reason for dogs to be smarter.
