Well, if you don't speak like that, you'd have to express it in some other way. But "Why am I so brilliant?" has a different meaning.

"Why am I so brilliant" states your brilliancy as a fact and asks for the reason of it. "Why do I think I am so brilliant" states as a fact that you think you are brilliant, and asks for the reason why you think that. The fact that you didn't understand this shows that you aren't very brilliant. 😛
