How long it takes to get from 1400 to 1800 rating, with an average talent? I
have only two and a half hours daily for playing and practicing chess. How shuld I spend this time in the most effective way? What is the difference beetwen an 1400 or 1800 player? Is it possible reach 1800 or at least 1700 within few months? On this site I see some guys that lear ...[text shortened]... ow is this possible (ok, I now, opening databases are useful help, but do they help THAT much?!)
At 800 you need to step back, learn the principles and stop dropping pieces before you do anything further

Again!!! Everybody thinks that I am an 800 player. I am 1600 at Fics, but I am sure I would be a little less if I would play OTB games. But I am not 800, my time expires every time, because I don't play here often, I am addicted to real-time games.
blitz? standard?...suicide?
furthermore, whats the RD?

Originally posted by ivan2908I had a look at a couple of your games. You lost them quickly to players rated less than 1200 and not by time outs.

Are you just taking the mikey here and wasting everyones time?

I didn't play seriously. There is no need to be arrogant. If my question about improving disturbs you, just ignore it.

I do minimum of around 2-3h of tactics every day, play 2-4h, books 1h, and I'm at 1700 now after 15 months. from 800 to 1800 about the same, maybe 1-2 months less.

I'm pretty sure anybody claiming to progress considerably faster is not exactly telling everything. usually it turns out they've actually played a lot longer, but count only the time they been in a club or done tournaments etc.
there's no substitute for hard work, and everybody with a half decent rating has done their share of it. there are no shortcuts in chess.
and no, db's are not going to miraculously turn you into a stronger player. but they're a valuable learning tool, if used right.
wow.. 2 hours a day, 3 hours aday.. no wonder I'm a slow improver compared to many. i make my moves and have maybe less than an 20 minutes a day for the moves.. I don't have 2 - 3 hours in a day to myself let alone for a particular hobbie.
sorry RahimK - I've downloaded the tactics, but just haven't had time to go over them..

Tactics and more tactics are the easiest way to gain rating points. That helped me a lot to get from 1400 to 1850 ish.
