Trying to focus on the opponents threats.. i've been playing well against a few 1600+ players lately. This is how I feel i can tell if I'm a 1600 player, by how I play against 1600's. Where's that Getting to 1800 thread? 🙂
I'm at 1668.. got a few games on the go where i'll drop, but more that i'll climb..
My main thing, is I've been trying to increase the amount of time I review my moves and don't move just blindly.
My last 14 games I'm 1 draw, 1 loss, and 12 wins. (only 3 of those against below 1400 players i believe)

I have been using databases for the past 40 or so games, and my rating has climbed to float around 1650-1700 ish. It seems that getting started properly is a BIG piece of the puzzle. I'm still working on the best way to come up with a plan after I run our of book moves. Currently, I basically try to look for tactical opportunities on each move, and if I don't find any then I look for ways to improve my mobility or decrease my opponent's mobility. I know that this is sort of fast-food planning, but it seems enough to maintain me at or above 1600.
EDIT- I forgot to add that I have been spending much more time trying to figure out my opponents last move. A great suggestion that I got a long time ago from a friend, and I have seen Rahim suggest the same idea to us, is to imagine that the opponent can move again, and try to figure out what that move would be.

Great, So keep doing those 5 tactic puzzles a day at least and after awhile I will post about planning and that should be it for this thread. If that doesn't get you to 1600 then you are doing something wrong or taking short cuts 🙁

How long it takes to get from 1400 to 1800 rating, with an average talent? I
have only two and a half hours daily for playing and practicing chess. How shuld I spend this time in the most effective way? What is the difference beetwen an 1400 or 1800 player? Is it possible reach 1800 or at least 1700 within few months? On this site I see some guys that learned to play chess maybe a year ago, and now they are 1800. How is this possible (ok, I now, opening databases are useful help, but do they help THAT much?!)
