Join a chess club, work on your tactics and read several chess books. That should get you to 1800 in say 3 years.
After that if you still enjoy chess and want to improve you are looking at a couple of more years to get to 2000.
So I'd say 4-6 years to get to 2000. Are you in for that?
I feel really close to peaking around 1600 - I'm on a good streak.
