I never intended castling. King to centre and push those central pawns was my only plan at this stage.

Most 1500-1600 players lose in the endgame after putting up a good show in the opening and long into the middle.

The "plan" when they are playing well is to improve quietly and wait for the inevitable mistake rather than take unnecessary chances.

If the grob is that good then why don,t any grandmasters play it. E4 is the most popular move for a reason, reason being that it is the most sensible first move.

Basman played it. He has beaten GMs with it!

Basman is an IM, and he's the laughing stock of chess. Keene and his friend, made a bet how many moves it would take for basman to resign, Keene won 1 move earlier than his friend at 20.5 moves

I`m not fan of Grob, but I must say that such kind of unortodoux opening are quite useful against players who have problems to play out of their favourite opening schemes. If we talking about who is s** then I must say that players which denies things they dont understand s** much more.

Certainly worth preparing for the Grob and The Polish (1.b4 ) which looks to me like a sort of queen side equivalent to the Grob...anyway I fell for simple trap with it a couple of nights ago in a league match I was playing black:

1.b4...e5
2.Bb2...Bxb4
3.Bxe5...Nc6 (exceptionally dumb move with hindsight but I was just going for simple dev. bringing the knight to a good sq etc. but failed to check whites choices.)
4.Bxg7... white won the rook a few moves later and went on to win the game. My opponent was 11!

So I reckon some plan against both 1.g4 and 1.b4 is worth having.

Today in the Portsmouth Congress I beat a player rated 2025 - 2175 (there is some confusion on his rating as he is foreign and has changed is name but it is certainly no lower than 2025) OTB.

It was clear he had never faced it before and he took ages thinking about the first 6 moves. I will get it posted on www.farehamchess.org uk in about a week.

So the Grob can win against tough players.

In the evening I lost against the French in 75 moves against a player graded only 1975 so which was better?
