Add me to the list.

The damn things should be automatic so as to stop stupid, pointless, endless threads like this. This sillyness has been going on for years.

If your time runs out, expect to lose. Get over it, already!

I mostly agree, but if an automatic timeout would be introduced for all games including personal games, I would like an option for untimed games or for switching off the automatic timeout. In some friendly games I don't care how much time my opponent takes to move (other than that we may be in the middle of an interesting discussion and I can't wait for the reply 😉), and it would be very annoying if such a game would get timed out automatically.

Most people seem to think you win in OTB chess when the other player flag falls........this isnt true you have to claim the win once the flag has fallen.

As I understand it if you're mated while the opponents flag has fallen but you didnt claim then you lose.

I recall hearing this rule in a Tal game. Tal's first win over a GM (Averbakh) had an ending that could have resulted the same way. As the story goes Averbakh's flag fell, and Tal was about to make a move, but his team captain held his hand back so that Tal would be assured of the win.

It's much easier to assume everyone is stupid and make a list (much shorter) of the exceptions.

On this site I have noticed a surprisingly high number of exceptions, although still our fair share of idiots.

I must be right at the top of your stupid list then. I had 6 skulls on my list of games, 1 of which seems a definate loss despite still being in book, 2 are wins and 3 unclear.

I have not claimed any of these as timeouts as their vacation flags are set. 2 of them are against the player whom the 2 members at the top of this thread claimed time outs against (which started me off down this thread).

Maybe I am stupid not to do this. Maybe I will change my views if people start claiming time outs against me. I don't expect to lose on time outs. If I am going away I will set a 28 day time bank - simple really! BUT, and this is the problem, the unexpected can come up and I could be called away unexpectedly. For example, my father in law, aged 86 lives in NZ. If (when) he passes away an unexpectedly long trip may become necessary. Its adding insult to our misery to claim all these as timeouts surely?

Of course, I don't mind playing people who think I am stupid, but I would hope in the circumstances I have outlined above my opponents would be reasonable enough to confirm my inherent belief that all people are decent and reasonable and would not claim the timeouts.

War is war loser. To claim a skull or not is solely the choice of the player presented with the option.

You take this far too seriously.

This isn't war! It's supposed to be fun isn't it? Am I missing something important here?

By the way your prfile states "unless ... I will time you out"

So vacation flag set! funeral in NZ! Special consideration requested! If you will time me out in such circumstanes better change your profile

Whether or not I will timeout is of no consequence to my opinion of people who call people bad sportspeople for merely doing what they are entitled to do by the rules.

EDIT: I'll make a special exception should I ever play you. You will be timed out the minute your timebank expires no matter what you have in your message.

I imagine we will play one day as my rating rises to your elevated heights.

In view of your attitude, as an exception, I will remember to take a time out against you!

The rules of this site state in the F.A.Q. "Please be considerate with timeouts – send a reminder if possible. If a user is set on vacation, please allow a reasonable period before you take the timeout."

I guess they just don't apply to most people here. I mistakenly thought chess players were considerate and sporting (and like me want to win over the board)

I think having an untimed option would be great.

But for the rest, I strongly support the concept of automatic timeouts. There should be no discretion. The current system perpetuates an air of poor sportsmanship, recriminations and distrust. The time-out should just happen. If players are agrieved by that they can only blame themselves for accepting those time controls in the first place, or they can blame their respective God(s or lack thereof) for whatever circumstances have kept them from completing their games. But they cannot blame their opponents.
