When you hit "reply", you can also pop up a "chat log", just like before, from the top left of the new message box. ("Chat Log" button.)

Far easier to read and scroll through.
Russ,

It might be me, and if it is, my apologies. I noticed that when I go back into a game that has ended, and I want to see my "chat log" to look at what was said when I need information, I no longer have the ability to do so. Once the game had ended, I had no access to the icon "chat log".

I use to be able to go back into the chat log a month later after a game ended and I could see what was said. That is not the case, at least not for me. It's not important for most, I'm sure, but I thought I'd ask.

That chat log is still available on a tab (below the Submit Move button).

I expect you prefer the pop up window containing the full chat, which is always available during chat?

No you had it right. I don't need the log present all the time. lol I know where the icon is and it works great during a "live" game.

Problem is a month after the game is over, or six months, it doesn't allow you to go back and read it.

Only while the game is active. Does that make sense? I have trouble making a point at times.

I tested going back to a game that finished over a year ago, and was able to read my chat history for that game with no problems. I tested the beta version as well as the current production version and it worked fine in both cases.

I'm on an older laptop, running win7 and firefox. I thought I would mention this to help you guys to sort out what the problem might be.

@mwmiller

I think the issue is that if no message has been sent on the last move, the chat log button for the larger chat log is not available. The tabbed version is a very cramped on a smaller screen, so I understand why he might want this.

And thanks for testing on Win 7/Firefox, something I do not have available anymore.

Thank you both, you and Russ for responding. What am I doing wrong? I can't even see the icon that says "chat log" to click on. It's driving me nuts. There are times I have to look back and can't.

So lets say the game is over. What do I look for? If you would not mind helping?

As the Chat Log tab is not the best way to read the chat, I've just pushed out an update - the primary "Chat" button is replaced with a "Chat Log" button when the game is over, rather than being completely absent.

So, that button will be available always, but disabled when not your turn to move. So you will still need the tab in that case.

edit : Ok, scrap that, as I was moving towards this anyway, I may as well go with it now.

The "Chat Log" tab is gone, and now the main "Chat" Button will either show as a "Chat" when available, or "Chat Log" when not. (Opponent's move or game over)

It has tided up the most cluttered part of the interface, so I anyone has any objections, let me know. This is a late Friday deployment, so I may be slow to revert it even if there is good reason.

edit again : @Michael-Martin - Can I confirm you are using the beta, not just the regular site?

I'm on a laptop, fast service, current windows version, I use edge and Google. Not sure what Beta is. It's a testing version of a software?

I am the only one who cares about this. Please, don't do anything extra on what I'm talking about. It's not a big deal at all. I can just cut and paste to save what I need.

Thank you so much for responding, as I know you are busy day and night with your site. I am grateful.

You are in the beta feedback thread, and I initially assumed you were using the new beta version (you can too, if you wish, beta.redhotpawn.com).

As this is clearly not the case though, any changes will not be available to you until after the release of the beta to production. Soon!

@Michael-Martin
Hey Michael, are you asking how to locate your chat log in a game that has already been completed and archived?

If that is the case, what you do is find the game, and on the right of the game id line you will see the final status for the game, where it shows "Won, Lost, or Drawn".

Click on that and the board page will open up and show the final piece position.

To the right of the board you will see the "chat log" tab. Click that link and a window should open up and allow you to schroll up and down to see the entire chat log messages for that game.

Apologies if I'm way off track about what you are asking. πŸ™‚

Spot on EXACTLY what I was asking and I'll follow your steps. It seems things will change to make it easier after Russ is done making his changes.

Thank you so much for the help. I'm very grateful.

sincerely,
Michael

Hi Michael

I am using the beta version on a desktop.

I always archive finished games.

I went into one and on the right just below the two players names saw the 'chat log' box and clicked on it; the whole of the chat during the game appeared.

even better because I know how to archive my games. I use to do it but now will be doing it all the time. Great tip and thank you. That is so easy to do as well.

Sincerely appreciate your help.

Was it always highlighted orange after playing a move? Feel like it used to be green... Or I'm going nuts πŸ˜„

Edit: Also now on analyze board the move is highlighted, can we have an option to remove that?

@Russ

I tried to re-start a terminated game from a set up position in which my opponent is in check and to move; the 'system' returns an error--"cannot start a game in check." Would you please change this?
