ok... a debate has sort of started in the Debates forum stating that Catholics are NOT Christians?
i am really finding this hard to get my head round... can anyone here help me understand?
PrinceofOrange is clearly a supporter of the Orange Order, which originates in the occupied north of Ireland and is essentially a vehicle for anti-catholic sectarianism. You're lucky he accepts catholics as human beings.
Their tentacles extend to the West of Scotland, where PoO and I both are.
A shame to see such bigotry in a 16-year-old.

That is a dreadful shame. Some of the male members of my family used to have very close ties to the Orange Order. I was very happy to hear that they turned in their sashes about six years ago.
Hand out some bongos and get the Orangemen in a drum circle.

Can't you have atheist Christians then?
The term 'Christian' has a well-understood (if not well-articulated) meaning that is more than just "anyone who calls himself a Christian".
I don't think it really makes sense though - Christianity hinges on issues of God, Jesus as Divine, and so on.
Sure, you might act like a Christian - in the sense of loving your neighbour and being compassionate and all that, but I try to be like that, which doesn't make me a Christian.
You might doubt some of the central issues of Christianity - the resurrection, the virgin birth, etc. - John Shelby Spong has written very interesting critiques of these, and he's a Christian Bishop!
But I don't think you could be an atheist and a Christian.

That's exactly right. Moreover, according to ivanhoe, the only way to correctly understand the Bible is to have a Catholic priest explain it to you.
