Why are you having such a hard time with this?
I think feeding fundamentalists with confirmation bias fodder [from any place on any spectrum] is a form of politics, and a person ~ even if you don't recall who it was ~ who serves people up with spurious 'data' or 'facts' to underpin extreme views is a kind of politician, undoubtedly.

OK, here is a challenge to anybody who thinks that things have gotten worse in the last 100 years. Give up the internet and your computer and smartphone for one week. You will change your mind very quickly.
If you want a real challenge, try giving up electricity for a whole day.

I have already done that several times for up to three days at a time, except for the phone. It is not fun, but when storms come through and knocks the power out, all you can do is wait until the power company can restore the power. I seem to be in the area that they wait till the last to restore. I thought about buying a generator, but haven't done it yet.

Id like to live in Scotland 1314, where i could be present on the field of Bannockburn to witness that glorious day of freedom, whence Edward II was sent hame and where the biggest concentration of Englishman in Scotland is to be found, all six feet under the earth! 😛

oooh the 1300's lovely....a particular nasty little century. marked by constant wars all around the globe and 70 years of famine in europe. a famine so bad that the average life expectancy fluctuated between 35 and 28!!! and in the last third of the century the black death kicked in, dropping the average life to just 17years, yes just 17 short years, which was probably a good thing if you think about how miserable the average life was during that period.

if you boys get independence in the next few years, will you still be arguing things are getting worse?

worse in what sense?

I would have loved to have lived in British India, right up there in Delhi with the Sultan in the red fort, id parade my wives around on elephants like Dalhousie and nobody would think anything of it. Me and the Sultan would compose poems and play chess.

It seems that the real reason you think things are getting worse is you believed all the nice fairy tales you heard about the past - and selectively ignored all the bad ones.

(and chances are, you'd be one of the Englishmen buried six feet under).
