Kirk, you ain’t gonna like this one—

The Hebrew letter standing for the numeral 40 is mem (M); the letter for 8 is chet (CH, pronunced somewhat like the Scottish ch in “loch&rdquo😉. Depending on the vowel points, the word formed by these two letters can mean marrow, marrowy, fat or wealthy.

On the other hand, using “small gematria,” the numerals are reduced additively to their sum: 12. This is a basic Hebrew number of completion or fullness (such as the 12 tribes of Israel).

The 12th Hebrew letter is lamed (L). lamed, spelled out as a word, can mean to learn or to study. A Jewish mystical text attributed to Rabbi Akiva says it is to read as “a heart that understands knowledge.” (from Edward Hoffman, The Hebrew Alphabet.)

In his The Book of Hebrew Letters, Rabbi Lawrence Kushner writes: “Oh so beautiful Lamed. Tall and elegant like a palm branch (lulav) waved high,” from the shape of the Hebrew letter.

So, at age 48, you could be: (1) putting on weight, (2) getting wealthy, or (3) becoming “a heart that understands knowledge.”

There are a number of ways to do gematria, I have only playfully scratched the surface here. (I used to have access to an online source that would give me all the Hebrew words that added up to a given number, but I can no longer access it.)

Yeah, I found that one. I actually used it for the above, 'cause I didn't have my handy-dandy letter-chart...well, handy. 🙂 I used to access a gematria calculator site that would call up all Hebrew words with a certain numerical value, but for some reason I can't now. Thanks, though, as always.

Actually it didn't sound too bad to me at all. I am not obese, but I'd like to be down just a few pounds. I'm sort of at the age where I'm feelin like a woman cuz I turn sideways while lookin at myself in the mirror.

That part about "a heart that understands knowledge" will surely come as a deep disappointment to a few around here, but we must accept truth where it is to be found even in the Jewish mystical text.
