What do I invoke when I use the word "love"? That word is also not in the original
Jewish or Christian text.

Did you read and comprehend any of the couple of dozen times I told you that quoting the bible at me was utterly and completely pointless?
it should be fairly obvious by now that any discussion with the likes of dasa or rjhinds will lead absolutely nowhere.

I have to confess - when I see how these peolpe treat women my gut says to let these animals blow each other to bits. I have a hard time being at all sympathetic to Islamic people or their corrupt governments.
its never helpful to refer to other humans as 'animals' its not very far from the language african-americans were subjected to a few years back.
when looking at the islamic nations that subjugate woman, i think it is wise to look back over our own history and look at how we in the west treated woman, also how morally upright we were when it came to our treatment of people from the developing world, were we 'animals'.
corrupt governments are not an islamic problem, its a global problem have a look at russia and who can ignore the big fat millionaires of american politics giving out big old contracts to companies they just happen to work for.

Why didn't I see that?!
It must be all those bible verses where women are treated as the property of,
and as being inferior to, men.
Possibly it could also be all the Christian prudes launching assault after assault on
women's rights because they don't conform to the biblical ideal of the perfect baby
making housewife.
And birth should be painful don't you know because of Eve and the whole business
with the apple.
And women should do it as often as possible (once safely married off to a man of course)
so that they can suffer as much as possible as god intended.
Maybe it has something to do with women being labelled sluts and whores for simply being
sexual beings who have sex outside of religiously condoned marriage.
Perhaps it was the fact that women had to (and still have to) fight for the same rights men
get simply for being men and that most of the opposition comes from theists who can cite
chapter and verse from their holy book on why it is that women shouldn't get the same rights
as men do.
Maybe it's because your talking complete horse-hockey again and your claims are simply not true.
Also for every Christian you can cite who campaigned against slavery I can cite one using the bible
to argue for it.
The bible is at most slavery neutral, and can be easily seen to support it.
The bible is heavily anti women, and women's rights, and 'god forbid' sexuality.
We have got the progress we have today DESPITE Christianity not because of it.

the teachings of the Christ, there will be no war, no unscrupulous scientists involved in
weapons programs, no greedy industrialist exploiting the earth's natural resources to
the detriment of the eco system, no spiritually myopic consumerism fuelled by greedy
bankers and corrupt businesses pandering to the mestic hedonists whose only thought
is that personal freedom is paramount, no corrupt politicians promising to deliver
policies which can never solve mankind's basic problems while they themselves live in
palaces and most of all, no one will kill the children anymore on the basis of social
convenience, 115,000 after this day is over. Yes indeed, as soon as we get rid of the
materialists and apply in an uncompromising way, the teaching of the Christ we shall
have made real progress.

Originally posted by robbie carrobieCertainly and that has been tried. Just one example - Isabella and Ferdinand's Spain, with its uncompromising use of the Inquisition. Their book burning and expulsion of Jews and Muslims brought the formerly wealthy and diverse state to a condition of barren economic stagnation and formed a creative desert which was so brilliantly satirized in Don Quixote. The Spanish periodically did expel all bankers too. It also went periodically bankrupt. Silver from the New World kept them going, though in a destructive way since it brought inflation and poverty to the people of Spain. And to get rid of the horrible human sacrifices of the Aztec Religion they introduced to the New World the Auto Da Fe - an Act of Faith which basically entailed torturing and burning alive more people than the Aztecs ever managed to sacrifice.

made lots of converts? Forced coercion i dont think is a teaching of Christ, although I
am willing to stand corrected.

PEOPLE are responsible for women's rights.
Some of them were atheists, some were theists of various stripes.
But the morality they espoused and the rights that were fought for and won are secular.
They were not derived from, and they are contradictory to, any religious doctrines or teachings
and they certainly were not derived from any god.
The bible values women much much less than men, and condones slavery.
The people who realised that this was wrong and fought against it were fighting for and espousing
secular morality... Even if they didn't know it.
