Doesn't the designation "son of man" strike you? I certainly find it striking, and his listeners probably did, too. It clearly did not mean the son of a particular man; it meant something like "mankind." The scriptural term in Greek is huios anthropou. There is another Greek word to speak specifically of a "man" as contrasted with a "woman."

That he called himself the son of Mary has an obvious meaning; a particular woman bore him. Mankind did not. So what was that supposed to mean?
