Jesus = The Truth
John 8:32 - and you will know the TRUTH, and the TRUTH will make you free."
Ironically Jesus said he was the Truth. So that means he can set you free of all your problems if you come to him, but you must believe in your heart that he will do it.
John 14:6 - Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the TRUTH, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me.

What if he was lying?
the structure of the argument is essentially
1. jesus said he is the truth
2. jesus said the truth will set you free
3. therefore jesus will set you free
so 3 follows if 1 and 2 are true, and 1 and 2 are true presumably only if jesus wasn't lying or mistaken.
i think the argument ultimately cannot be defended on any grounds that are satisfying to any observer without faith in jesus. ultimately, from what i can tell, the christian's base argument boils down to 'you should believe the bible because it is the bible.' until my faith in the bible strengthens, this will be unsatisfying to me. i'll admit that i probably need to sit down and read more with a completely open mind (this does not mean just the bible)...
