In 1972, we could barely play the game at all. Now we produce some of the best players in the world.
I didn't feel that in this years world cup that any team really stood out. Italy won, but they hardly dominated. Portugal was exciting. France seemed like the best team most of the way. Brazil looked out-of-synch for most of the tournament.
Name one team that was clearly better than average.
Most teams did better than the US in this tournament and if you're going for longer term form then the US are above-average worldwide but below average at the level of World Cup finals.
Edit - I mean, don't start comparing the US with teams like Italy, France, Brazil or even Portugal and England. Those are the among the top 10 national teams, the US isn't comparable to them yet.

Joltin' Joe Carter, Lloyd Moseby, Paul Molitor, Dave Stieb, Damaso Garcia,...that was a great team. A veritable dynasty at the time.
I loved that team.
Jimmy Key, Ernie Whitt, Tom Henke,...
Who else played for those guys?
In '92 we had Olerud, Alomar, Gruber, Devon White (an incredible CF), Carter and Dave Winfield with Jack Morris, Key, Stieb, Hentgen, Guzman, Stottlemyre, Cone, Leiter, Ward, Henke et al.
The next year we picked up Molitor and Ricky Henderson.
Man those were great years.
