The accident is certainly tragic and if he is found to be criminally at fault he should be punished severely. The fact he is an Indian national seeking asylum and/or refugee status should have no bearing on that, however.

As I've already explained and as the fact there has been ongoing immigration proceedings for almost 7 years in his case, he has not been found to be here illegally and, in fact, his presence in this country is allowed by law. You might not like that law, but stamping your feet about it doesn't change it.
No, national media, except for screechy right wing propaganda networks, didn't make a big deal out of a fatal accident and why would they? There were about 40,000 killed in such accidents last year or more than a 100 a day.

There doesn't seem to be any dispute about the fact that he has applied for refugee status and that his case has been ongoing for about 7 years. That makes his presence in the US legal until an immigration judge decides otherwise. Any and all media reports saying otherwise are either ignorant of the law (the media, left and right, usually does a terrible job reporting legal issues) or parroting false propaganda.
