They're probably refering to the Bill Of Rights, the first ten amendments to the constitution. At the time they were introduced, no other country had specified such personal liberties or freedom from government intrusion. Europeans at the time didn't. Many other countries today still don't.

I think you may be confusing patriotism with nationalism.

Why wouldn't you be proud of where you came from? I suppose if you are not proud, you are embarassed, or indifferent? What would you say?
